The Mandarin revealed for Iron Man 3:

Image

For those in the dark:

The Mandarin is Iron Man's arch-nemesis in the comics. I'm surprised it took 3 movies to get him in there. He has 10 rings of power on each finger that gives him control over various powers and elements. They seem to be magical at first glance, but in reality they are of alien technology from a crashed spacecraft that The Mandarin found. Various powers include heat/fire, cold/ice, gravity manipulation, energy blasts, wind, and others. He also is a master of martial arts and of Eastern mysticism.

Lemora: A Childs Tale of the Supernatural
Image

Now that noise’s movie choice is safely out of the way, (Thank you everyone for your kind comments and links. I’m glad you enjoyed it.) and since TCM is still on their Month of Oscars kick, the next couple of weeks are going to be dedicated to my “Underground Backlog”. I ended up picking this one at random. I didn’t know what to expect from this movie, but with a subtitle of A Childs Tale of the Supernatural I wasn’t expecting the level of creepiness I received.

Lemora is the tale of 13 year old Lila Lee. Lila’s father is a dangerous and wanted man, a gangster who’s currently on the run after murdering Lila’s mother

Image
As well as the ‘handyman’.

and running down the little old lady down the street.

Image
Damn, dude. That’s just cold.

In spite of this Lila is viewed by many as an angel, one as pure as the fresh driven snow. She dislikes the life of her father and has been taken in by the reverend of her church’s congregation and become a singer in the choir.

Everything seems to be going swell, until one day when she receives a mysterious letter from a woman called Lemora. It tells Lila that her father is gravely ill and wishes to see her to ask for forgiveness, but only if she goes to the town of Asteroth (that should have been her first clue) and tells no one.

Trying to be a good little Christian, she sneaks away from her overtly smitten reverend guardian (read: eww) and goes on a journey that at every turn will threaten to corrupt her, body and soul.

Image
Cults’ll to that. Don’t join one kids, no matter how fashionable the robes look!

One thing that really impressed me about this movie was its atmosphere. Even with all its disturbing and violent imagery the movie still comes across as being very much a ‘fairytale’. It’s like a southern gothic Snow White, except in this case Snow White is 13 and all the dwarves are trying to eat her.

Image
Nom. Nom. Nom.

In the beginning the move also throws several situations at Lila that, had they been written down, would have fit in perfectly as a cautionary tale in a compellation of Grimm’s Fairytales.

There’s that creepy guy at the bus station who offers Lila a chocolate…

Image
I guess this was before the whole “Don’t take candy from strangers” campaign kicked in.

The not-quite-right bus driver….

Image
Well, I’ll be…The school bus of the damned has mood lighting.

And the required “Don’t eat or drink s&^% when you don’t know what it is” point…

Image
Especially when it looks like raw meat.

None of this is shoved down your throat, but coupled with the lighting, sets and atmosphere they definitely give you the feeling that you’re watching a grittier, low-budget fairytale, one filled with all the creepy facets of the earlier, non-Disnefied versions.

One of the creepier aspects of the film revolves around Lila herself. It doesn’t take long for you to realize that the film is about he corruption of innocence. Which is all well and good, until you realize they’re trying to sexualize someone who’s supposed to be a 13-year-old girl.

But it isn’t until Lemora shows up that things start to get really creepy.

Image
And I mean that in a “Maybe I shouldn’t be watching this” kind of way. In fact, I’m kind of
uncomfortable looking at this image now.

Lemora is just a little too obsessed with Lila. Granted, when it come to the undead, there’s always a level of sexual creepiness involved. That’s to be expected, really. But when one of your targets involves a 13-year-old, you start to veer into the realm of WTF.

This idea isn’t really heavily focused on but it’s there and it’s obvious, making an otherwise innocuous scene all the more unsettling.

Image
See this happy looking scene? Bright colors…Dancing…Looks cute
right? Trust me, IT’S NOT.

It also contains the creepiest addition I find you can add to any film: creepy, giggling little children.

Image
This is the stuff nightmares are made off, right here.

Lemora was obviously made on a shoe-string like budget and has several amateurish flaws, as well as an ‘open for interpretation’ endng. But if you can get over that you’ll find a film with impressive lighting, music and locations that come together to form a compelling, dream-like atmosphere. The dialogue isn’t very strong, but the movie’s tone and pacing are sharp and the actor’s movements and expressions are cinematic. If you’re someone who appreciates low-budget horror movies or enjoy fairytales with a darker bent, then Lemora is something you may like to look into.

Cold War

A considerable budget and an excellent cast couldn't save Cold War from being a mediocre HK thriller at best.

First Harrison Ford in talks for a return to Han Solo, and now this exciting news:

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainmen ... -1.1271131
Mark Hamill: 'Star Wars' cast in talks to reunite for 'Episode VII'

Will Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia share the silver screen again? Hamill says that he may join Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford in the new trilogy.

The force may be with a 'Star Wars' cast reunion after all.

Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the original blockbuster series, revealed to Entertainment Tonight that he is currently in talks about dusting off his light saber and reprising his classic role.

He'd be joining Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, a.k.a. Han Solo and Princess Leia, too.

"George [LUCAS] wanted to know whether we'd be interested. He did say that if we didn't want to do it, they wouldn't cast another actor in our parts — they would write us out," Hamill said.

But lest fans get too encouraged, Hamill reminded watchers that the deals on 'Episode VII' are far from being inked.

"I can tell you right away that we haven't signed any contracts," Hamill said.

Mark Hamill may join Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in he new episode of 'Star Wars.'

"We're in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm."

Hamill went on to note that those meetings had been postponed because both Andt and Kennedy are "busier than I am."

But in the case of a cast reunion, it looks like a case of all or nothing. Hamill commented that he would be reluctant to do the movie if Ford and Fisher aren't also on board.

"Another thing I'd want to make sure of is — are we going to have the whole gang back? Is Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee [WILLIAMS] and Tony Daniels, everybody that's around from the original, [COMING BACK]?"

Maybe so. Hamill's news comes on the heels of recent reports that Harrison Ford is set to return as the high-flying Millennium Falcon captain Han Solo.

Whether he's a part of the new trilogy or not, Hamill has some advice for he creative minds behind "Episode VII": Keep it simple.

"I said to George that I wanted to go back to the way it was, in the sense that ours was much more carefree and lighthearted and humorous," Hamill said, criticizing recent installments for special effects overkill.

"If they listen to me at all, it'll be 'Lighten up and go retro with the way it looks.'"

Paul Williams: Still Alive

I'm sure plenty of people here know who Paul Williams is, and if you don't, I guarantee you've heard one of his songs at some point in your life.

Still Alive is a documentary on the man and it's pretty interesting. It's not a standard doc, as Williams told the director that he could follow him around as long as he had a gig, but didn't allow him to just hang around him 24 hours a day. But it was pretty cool to see that the guy was still around, and still gigging, just not as much as when he was in his hey day. Also, there's a scene showing Tarantino talking (though its just footage you dont hear what hes saying) and the director states that Tarantino talked about "how much he loved Ishtar."

Just another reason I love Tarantino.

Not sure which was worse, TWD or the Oscars last night.

I agree with most of the decisions made regarding the award winners, but the show itself was awful.

The Gospel According to Philip K. Dick - a decent documentary about one of the craziest whacked our authors of our time. The little animated scenes between sections are terrible though and badly over used. But the soundtrack is awesome. If you like scifi/cyberpunk, its worth watching, but easily skipped.

Tales from the Script - an excellent documentary about script writing. Features little known writers like William Goldman, John Carpenter, David S. Ward, and a host of actual little known writers... Their starting out stories alone are worth watching it for.

You must not be a Seth Macfarlane fan. I thought he did very well as host and was somewhat surprised he resisted the temptation to try and get away with something during a live broadcast (I imagine that must be hard for any host, but especially for someone like him). I agree with what Hugh Jackman said a few years back that the Oscars need a little more show and a little less biz and I thought the show last night delivered on that. Then again, I'm a huge film buff, so the Oscars is like the Super Bowl for me.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.
