PS4 and next gen discussions

Post by TheVisualante »

I am going to be posting in this thread my videos regarding the PS4 and any next gen related discussions. To begin with, what did you guys think about the PS4 announcement, did it blow your minds away or did it disappoint? and what are you looking for from next gen consoles?

Here is what I thought along with highlights of the PS4 conference:

I just found out about the PS4 announcement from the forum

Wow! Eighth generation! I still remember playing games on my Atari 2600. What are games gonna be like when I'm eighty years old?

I hope Sony snags up lots of exclusives. That's one of the few things that made having a PS3 worth it. They need more franchises like God of War or Uncharted to help them stand out since the next Microsoft console will likely still be tons of shooters, western rpgs and other games that you can already play on PC. And they should give us lots of quality Japanese games and quirky, arty games. Sony needs to establish some sort of identity for itself with its software.

Give us what Microsoft WON'T be giving us

I read that Sony wants to make most PS4 games playable on the Vita

Just how powerful is that little handheld?

Not too interested. Maybe it's the emphasis on social media stuff, maybe it's the presence of the touchscreen on the controller, I don't know, but I'm not interested in the same way that I wasn't excited about the Wii U. It maybe that it feels like they are pushing too much stuff and I prefer my consoles fairly simple. I get the feeling that I may end up skipping this new generation.

Of course I'm just basing this off what they've said so far and things may change. And yeah, it is weird that they didn't reveal the console itself.

The graphics on the PS4 look better than what I'm playing now (PC and recently purchased XBOX-360) but it's not a mind-boggling difference that makes me want to break down Gamestop's door and pre-order one. Nicer lighting here, bigger landscapes there... not a $400 purchase for me now though. To be honest I feel like I've got more than enough entertainment on my hands considering all the XBOX games I've missed out on.

Maybe I've been spoiled by the past couple generations that saw really vast leaps in graphics. I'll never forget walking into the store as a kid and seeing Super Mario 64 on display. I remember thinking, "Wait... now he can move left, right, AND forwards and backwards? MIND BLOWN."

I guess it's taking longer for games to really capitalize noticably on better hardware. I remember first generation XBOX-360 games, I couldn't really distinguish them from original XBOX ones. But after a few years they came out with Oblivion and Gears of War and such which were much more tempting for me to buy them.

I also feel like I'm less enamored with hardware these days and more with specific games from specific developers. Hypothetically speaking a big announcement from Valve or Bethesda would excite me more than this did. Sony's conference was full of cool trailers, but it takes a special group of people with a proven track record to make a game I fall in love with. Maybe the Vita is kind of a morality play for what happens when awesome hardware has no people like this inventing worthwhile games for it. It's just kind of vapid and uninteresting. Heck, there's low-tech, more modest budget games I'd rather play if it came to that (like the upcoming Shantae game on the 3DS.)

Actually, the Oculus Rift excited me more than this thing. It just seems more radically different and neat. That's more or less the next gen toy I'm pining for.

The PS4 looks neat I guess but I don't think I'll be tempted to buy one till it's been out two or three years.

Good , I wanted to talk about this...

First thing is that I think I opened a thread sometime ago trying to imagine what will the next gen. console are going to bring , and I believe most us had the right expectation - no graphical jump , more of a device that controls your media life.

First I am not all that impressed by the graphics , it looks better but I think the difference of art style used some ps3 game could look better (Knack vs Uncharted ?)

Second , I am not sure if I am too old but I am really not into the social media thing. Not sure how sharing my game videos on facebook will add to the gaming experience, I rather be with my friends playing a game next to each other or online .

Third, no backward compatibility ? I am guessing ps1 games and ps2 will run in emulation but the ps3 library is so good they cant just skip on it.

fourth, I could be wrong but seems like I did not hear them talk about Bluray discs on conference , could it possibly mean they will ditch the disc media? that is what they seem to be going for with fast downloads-instant play thing .

Question: Now that ps4 is on x86 , its more of a PC than a console I guess since it does so much more than play games, I am guessing the next xbox will do the same, how much different is it from just buying a PC and hooking it up to your HDTV ?

The PC will be more capable since it will run ANY application , ANY emulator , not to mention online gaming store like Steam . As a matter of fact it could be better because on a PC you could use ps or 360 controller or any controller you like it. It is also upgradable , so future proof.

I was going to buy a PC and hook it up as my next gen. console but I am confused now as the lines between consoles and PCs are diminishing . As I see it , the only reason you might want to by ps4 or next Xbox are exclusive games , which are not too many last I checked ... especially on the Xbox

It's weird to me to see a post like this on a retro-gaming forum.
I used to be really into retro PC gaming, that is DOS-era games, and I remember having to set up a PC specifically geared towards the time period of games that I would most likely be playing. The compatibility issues were insane, and some games were an absolute bitch to get working.
Not so with consoles. You buy the console, you buy the cartridge, and boom—you're playing.

The answer to your question is also the answer to "why do consoles exist?": It's because they're convenient and cheaper than PCs. It's because they're dedicated gaming machines, with all the advantages (and drawbacks) that this brings with it. As long as there are people who want a dedicated box for gaming (and now video+audio content as well), consoles will be around, and they'll be better suited for these things than anything else.

It has a blu ray drive. This was confirmed after the conference.
