Here's what EG thinks about the PS4 so far

I hate to mention Microsoft here but I imagine a reversal of roles this time around. What possibly could they offer in their next Xbox? Who cares about mandatory Kinect and intrusive advertising? Bleh.
I love this part:
P.S. Another thing that is swirling around my inbox this morning is a tweet from Larry Hryb at Xbox having a little dig at last night's performance. "Announce a console without actually showing a console? That's one approach," he zinged. Sure Larry. And another approach is to launch a console with a 68 per cent failure rate. Be still. We'll get to you soon enough.

It'd be cool if the release of Diablo III on PS3/PS4 means they patch in controller support for it on PC.
dsheinem wrote:Thanks for sharing that. I too feel like this is the first system reveal for Sony without some hardware included in it that would make we want the machine regardless of what the game library turned out to be. The PS2 was my first DVD player, the PS3 is still my go to Blu-Ray player and Netflix machine, and the PS4...uses the internet in more ways? It isn't enough to dampen my enthusiasm for the system, but it does seem like a lack of hardware innovation compared to their previous launches.
I just read that PS4 will support 4K resolution display output for video ... that's kinda cool.

I'm not particularly thrilled, but it was a decent announcement. I like the Eurogamer article points about laying out your features and giving the other companies a chance to incorporate those elements into their systems. What's the worry, it doesn't look like any of those features seem revolutionary? The hardware will be fine.

I like the prospect of Blizzard's jump to the console market. Although it might be a tad late for Diablo III, this might be an attempt to see if the Titan Project would be a worthwhile consideration for consoles.

How much of that innovation really paid off though? Putting a DVD or Blu-ray drive in is a good marketing move, but there's nothing like that for them to include right now.

I think the simpler approach is what really forged the brand. The PS1 was the straightforward, cost-effective platform relative to the Saturn and N64. The odd custom hardware in the PS2 and 3 at best took extra effort to harness, and at worst meant worse ports relative to the competition. This time, they're looking to be using practically the same hardware as MS.

To me, they showed (well, spec'ed) a solid base to build on. I would have quite liked to see the actual hardware, pricing, and so on though.

Having a disc drive that plays movies isn't much in the way of hardware innovation. They need to stop 'innovating' with a mostly blunder like the cell chip. Hardware wise, I am pleased with the PS4. Software wise? We shall see...

Do you have no interest in stuff like Flower, Journey, Unfinished Swan, Echochrome etc?
I would like to play some of these games and have not, but I don't even play all of the great PC games I own/digitally-lease-for-a-nondetermined-time. Buying a console means more stuff that takes up space. I'd rather just buy more digital files that only take up harddrive space.

Innovation might be the wrong word for it, but I get what Dave is saying. I remember doing the same thing, where was so stoked that the PS2 played DVDs, because DVD players were still relatively expensive. Same thing with blu ray when the PS3 came out.

Oh I liked using it as well. But there isn't a new media format right now. I believe it should have a blu ray player again.

And you still kill me with controller for D3 talk lol.

Fairly speculative statement; I honestly doubt it will be bad. You don't even click on gold to pick it up anymore, loot drops aren't shared, so the only thing you have to single target are mobs. And I believe Blizzard is well within their abilities to adjust mechanics to allow for smooth gameplay, unless they go the lazy route. X-men Legends, Dungeon Siege, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance, and other titles have done it successfully.
