Just bought a NES! I have seen them in the market that I go to and the Gamestation near me for £40 with one controller and no box. Well, on ebay I got mine for £7.50. Granted it's sold as faulty, doesn't come with a controller or power lead and has no box but it is a Nes.
I imagine I will need a new 72-pin connector but I have heard that you can get a system working again by cleaning the terminals... Anyone had any success with this?
Also, in the picture of the item it looks as if the AV cables come out of the side of the Nes, is this normal?

Yes, that's how the connector works if you're hooking up the composite cables. You get one plug for video, and one for mono audio. You can also use an RF switch with the back connector, but RF switches aren't as good as the composite.
Personally, I feel that it's worth it to just replace the 72 pin connector. You can get one for pretty cheap, and doing the actual replacement is very easy. You simply remove several screws and place the new connector where the old one is.

I second the pin connector. I wouldn't even dream about owning a NES without a new pin connector!
