Was incredibly excited about a 3DS release until Capcom revealed there would be no online play. That's a huge blow. Local multiplayer is useless where I live, and just cutting/ignoring the multiplayer aspects of the game really affects it's length and value.

Since I have plan to buy a Wii U console, looks like I'll be waiting to see what happens with Monster Hunter 4.

Hmm.

Normally I'd say just go for the new version. It offers more content and will have some nice improvements over the Wii game. In addition, servers for Wii online play will be shut down soon - and online play is a major part of the game. You also should have no trouble finding takers if you want to trade/sell later.

However, Monster Hunter isn't a game that will appeal to everyone. If you can grab a cheap copy of the Wii version right away and start playing then it might be a good way to figure out if you want to invest in the latest and greatest version... although starting over would feel like a grind if you do upgrade.

This new release has all the online content in offline mode. So unless you need online multiplayer you're not missing anything on the 3DS version.

I see in your sig that you own a Wii U. You should check out the demo which comes out the 21st.

The Wii version will be cheaper but the servers are going to be shut down some time in April (the 30th, iirc). So if you really enjoy the game and want to jump online; you're not going to have that long to enjoy it.

I've only owned one Monster Hunter previously, on the PSP.

I remember liking the game but the killer being no online play. It's a fun game but it just feels so barren while you're alone. Maybe that's the feeling they wanted to go for (it is Monster HUNTER after all) but, to me it just made things get a bit stale. I definitely wish I could have had a friend with me while playing it.

Will the demo have online support so I can see how fleshed out it is? Is it going to be a simple party style system or will it be more in line with an MMO?

I'm probably just not "hardcore" enough, but there was a lot of upper level Monster Hunter content in the existing games that could be done solo... but was much more enjoyable when experienced with a group of friends. Based on multiple Capcom interviews, the game is (and always has been) built with multiplayer sessions in mind. Based on my personal experience, it's very good solo and truly great with friends.

That said, even without any multiplayer gaming at all, you'll still be able to get well over a hundred hours out of a Monster Hunter game.

What is the control scheme for the 3DS version? I don't mind there being only one analog stick if there's a camera-recentering button that I can tap pretty quickly to sort out the view.

I'm not sure I want a return to the Kid Icarus Uprising control scheme....
Have: Sega Genesis, SNES, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Atari 800XL, PC, N3DS XL, Wii U, GBA, Xbox One, Switch

Tapping something on the touch screen will apparently centre the view from what I've read.

IIRC, you can tap Left trigger to center the camera, there's also a lock-on for the main monster you're fighting, and there's a virtual d-pad on the touch screen.

Or you could skip the b.s. and play with the circle pad pro.

Looks like Amazon is offering a $20 discount if you buy both the WiiU and 3DS MH3U at the same time. Shipping offsets that a little, but so does paying less tax. Either way I thought it might interest anyone who was already considering buying both.

I really enjoyed Tri on the Wii, but after seeing what you guys said about multiplayer, I think I'll pass - is there really no online multiplayer on the 3DS for us North America folk?

^Online multiplayer is definitely Wii U only.

That's a cool deal for people who have all the required hardware.
