Not sure if you have Hulu or not but the Twilight Zone episodes are mostly great. Is Jericho on Netflix yet. That series, though extremely short is well worth watching and Doll House by Whedon is solid as well.

Also, how anyone can't get into Veronica Mars I'll never understand.

Yeah, mentioned Dollhouse, too bad was canceled - excellent show. We have the Twilight Zone collection on DVD already, but will give Jericho a go - that was on netflix awhile ago, i'm guessing it's still there.

We started "Once Upon a Time" tonight, one episode in, "ok" so far, seems promising.

Have you watched Heroes? It seems like it would be right up your alley based on some of the stuff you liked. Although I would advise against watching the final season as it really didn't need it and didn't really continue the story it just used the same characters to tell a different story.

And you should totally watch Freaks and Geeks. Such a good show, I can't believe it got canceled because of it airing an episode about drug use and yet That 70's Show went on way past its due date.

This is on my list to watch. Everything that I have seen so far has been hilarious. What don't you like about it?

I second this. My wife was really into it and I had no interest. I caught a bit of an episode she was watching (Series 2 Episode 1 "A Scandal in Belgravia") and I was riveted. I want to watch the whole run now.

I agree with dsheinem, this would be a great introduction to the Star Trek universe.

It's the best drama on television. The cold open of the first episode hooked me. Gets better every season with an incredible climax at the end of Season 5. I cannot recommend this show enough.

We seem to have similar taste, so hopefully these connect too:

Community is hilarious and very creative.
How I Met Your Mother is sometimes hammy, usually funny, occassionally brilliant.
Heroes has one of the best first seasons of all time, but you should just stop there because it's mostly downhill afterwards.
24 is high intensity, split-second decision-making, action. Jack Bauer is my hero.
And yes, watch Freaks and Geeks. It's great.

I'm also a sucker for sketch comedy like The Ben Stiller Show, Mr. Show, and Kids In The Hall.

Lots of good stuff coming in - awesome and thanks!

Heroes: Not sure why we never tried it tbh, but we are hearing the same things, excellent first season. I recall it was hyped like crazy, especially during football games at the time, and I think we both agreed we felt like we saw the best parts in the sheer number of ads for it, but will for sure give it a go.

Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Honestly, we both really really disliked it. Mainly the acting, all 4 main characters (DeVito wasn't in the first season, which is the only full season we watched). It was like they had one decent joke...and they'd make an episode out of it, like finding a way to get underage kids in a bar, or protesting at some women's function. The sort of thing that would have been one 30 second joke on Seinfeld they milked for 23 minutes each week. Felt very lazy and just not great, and again, all 4 lead characters were just annoying to us.

Community: Haven't heard of it - sounds intriguing to say the least.

Breaking Bad: We'll have to try it again - i'm sure i'd get into it.

Freaks and Geeks: This is one that I missed when it was on and only found out about it after the fact. A couple years ago I re-watched "My So Called Life" and "The Wonder Years", both staples of my youth, and both felt empty, I felt more sad watching them, than actual enjoyment. I guess that's what nostalgia is though. I'm hoping when I get around to this one that I get enjoyment and not sadness.

Yeah, the first season of Heroes was amazing...until they aired the season finale. It was so bad it pretty much unraveled everything that was so good about the entire season. That was when I stopped watching. It's like they built up this amazing season 1 story, but had no idea how to end it properly.

I remember people all over the internet calling Heroes the Lost killer during its first season and I used to roll my eyes. Turns out I was right. In retrospect, Lost was a show that maintained a higher level of quality throughout its six season run and has left a greater TV legacy. Heroes really only had one good season, and they ruined it with the season finale. When most people think of Heroes they just think about what a disappointment it was and how much potential it wasted. Heroes could have been the show that blew open the doors for other successful comic book hero shows, but it failed so miserably. Now you very rarely see super hero shows make it to the air in the wake of Heroes.

At least Smallville was successful, paving the way for a great show like Arrow, which will probably end up on Netflix at some point.

EDIT: Fringe and Chuck are two shows to watch for in the future, as I believe both will eventually come to Netflix streaming. Fringe is like a modern day X-Files. They just recently aired their series finale and it was amazing! Chuck is like a comedy spy show. It's full of fun pop culture references (including video game references) and great guest stars like Linda Hamilton, Chevy Chase, Kristin Kreuk, Scott Bakula, Carrie-Anne Moss, Steve Austin, and Timothy Dalton just to name a few. It's very much a pop culture geek show. Also, I've heard good things about Downtown Abbey and I believe that is on Netflix. I want to start watching that myself actually

One last show I'll mention is Friday Night Lights. I don't know if it would suit your tastes, but it's really good. On the service it seems like a typical teen drama that happens to take place in a football obsessed town, but it has really good writing, directing, and performances. As someone who never watches football and has little interest in teen dramas, I've found myself hooked on this show. It's a little known show, but if you do some research it got a lot critical acclaim.

Stargate is worth getting into. The series starts a little slow, feeling very Star Trek-ish (in the classic sense: planet of the week syndrome), but as the story starts to come together and stretch out to something more linear it really takes off. The last few seasons aren't very good, though. Basically, watch the beginning and then up through the middle. The best episodes are truly awesome and the characters have some really strong moments.

It isn't on Netflix any longer, but if you can get your hands on Babylon 5, the series is awesome, assuming you can survive the first season. The 1st season kills so many potential fans because it is such a low-budget mess. Season 2 changes EVERYTHING. See if you can go on-line and find an essentials or best-of list for season 1 to get through it. Many people stop at the end of season 4 because season 5 feels a bit tacked on. Season 5 is unnecessary. It's too bad season 1 has some essential episodes.

The original Star Trek is campy and many of the episodes don't hold up at all, but if you can find a Good Parts list which directs you to the most important or best episodes, it is worth watching those select episodes as a lead up to some of the movies (watch 1, 2, 4, 6 for the movies). I have a list someone provided me and it has proven pretty reliable. Let me know if you want me to share.

Stargate along will suck up a lot of your spare TV time. As for me, I've been re-watching the original GI Joe cartoon. I actually really like it. Campy but fun. Some of the voice actors are genuinely fantastic.

You know, the Highlander TV series is pretty good, too. The first 5-6 episodes are a little painful, but then it suddenly hits its stride and kicks ass. It is a bizarre and sudden shift in quality.

I would give it another try. A friend of mine has twin boys who did not like BB. They were ridiculed at their college and gave it another try and now they're hooked.

How someone can recommend The Kids in the Hall* and then recommend The Cleveland show blows my brains.

Get Fawlty Towers, How I met Your Mother, Monk, Columbo, Married With Children, and the first few seasons of The Cosby Show, The Office and Roseanne and you'll be set.

*Kids in the Hall was awesome.
