I thought The Wire was ok, but I'm not going to watch more than the one season I did (the first one). Got tired of the nonstop language, and a few aspects were too predictable.

this is a good recommendation as well, by the way.CRTGAMER wrote:Not sure if on NetFlix and its not a SciFi but a great series.
Homicide - Life On The Street
If the price ever comes down on the new slimmer set, I'll buy the DVDs. That good for multiple viewings.

The thing about The Wire is it's very realistic. It tries to make you feel like you're following real people as they go about their real lives, and for many of us that includes sex. There's an almost voyeuristic quality to the show. Character deaths are one of the best things about the show, because there's no manipulative music, no last words, no drama. It just happens, and life goes on, just like the real worldBoringSupreez wrote:I thought The Wire was ok, but I'm not going to watch more than the one season I did (the first one). The language turned me off initially, because there's just so much of it it seemed ridiculous, but after a while I just accepted that that's how these Baltimore people communicate. If you consider that they are living in crime infested areas or dealing with criminals and violence on a daily basis, it's not surprising.
The Wire is one of those shows you have to adjust to, it has its own feel that's unlike other shows. Also, I think the show has the strongest gay characters I've ever seen because they don't really adhere to stereotypes. Wait until you see Omar.

Cursing and sex aren't a problem for us if they fit the show and isn't for its own sake or shock value. Deadwood overused language to a fault I thought. My wife hates mutilation and torture too - again, if it fits the story, it's fine to an extent - but she abhors the SAW and Hostel movies. The Shield and Oz got close to overusing.
Pedophilia gives my wife nightmares - I can accept it in TV and get over it pretty quick, but my wife, nope, TV goes off instantly. She honestly can't watch anything with Eric Stoltz anymore, which is too bad, as he's in a ton of good stuff. I was very surprised she was able to put some of the scenes in Rome into context, whereas Carnivale she won't watch again either.
Gamerforlife - thanks for the detailed response, lots of good info.
I'd like to try Breaking Bad again, but my wife just didn't dig it. We found the main young actor (from the first 3 episodes anyways) a bit annoying and maybe he gets better, but it was enough that we weren't enjoying it.

Re: Need some TV Series on Netflix recommendations
I saw the whole first season, so yeah. Omar was a good character. It's just the lesbian cop (I can't remember her name) that bugged me, specifically because she was the one single part of the show that broke from the realism. Instead we get usual television tropes of lesbians being hot and having sex. That wasn't because of realism, it was because of the fact that sex sells. Seriously, she was the single character in the show I was able to accurately predict.Gamerforlife wrote:The thing about The Wire is it's very realistic. As for the language, I've worked with people that talk like that. I know it's realistic, but I get tired of it IRL too.
Anyway, I don't hate The Wire I just don't intend to continue watching.

Poirot - David Suchet is brilliant as Agatha Christie's legendary detective. The first six seasons are on Netflix, and every single episode is wonderful. My wife raved about it before we started watching it, but I was not sure that I would like it. After a few episodes, however, I was completely hooked. I highly, highly recommend it if either you or your wife like: (a) period dramas or (b) murder mysteries.

Oh, I should point out Caprica for mjmjr25. I haven't watched it, but it's a prequel to Battlestar Galactica. I think it only lasted a season, so it wouldn't take long to get through it. Also, Sci Fi aired a BSG movie this past Sunday called Blood and Chrome. It's also a prequel about a young Adama. I think you can watch it online here:

I think the Sci Fi version has extra footage though. I'd keep an eye out for any re-airings or wait a few days for the DVD/Blu ray

Jesse's character is super interesting and much more in depth later on.mjmjr25 wrote:

I don't like the show that much either. Too dark for me, just takes a lot of stamina to watch IMO.
Older. Not wiser.
