The Controller Chronicles (Sega)

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

For a while now, I've started a few review series on my youtube channel. Among them is a series I call the Controller Chronicles, named of course after the long running public broadcast of yesteryear, The Computer Chronicles.

This series aims to showcase the best gaming controllers on the market with some thoughts on their design and performance. Of course, I can only review controllers I own.

As this is the Sega board, I'll only cover Sega related controllers here.

I have a MegaFire controller lying about somewhere. I don't know what good all those switches are, but it works just fine as a regular controller.

The switches are turbo fire and auto fire. They are primarily useful for the many, many shoot 'em ups on the Genesis/MegaDrive.

Since they are individual turbo fire and (unlike the model 3 controller's turbo which puts ALL buttons on turbo) you can have rapid fire on one button but then have normal jumps or bombs or weapon switching on other buttons.

It also helps a lot with RPG grinding. In Phantasy Star for example if you're going through an area where all your characters attack enemies, set it to auto fire the C button and watch battles fly by much more easily.

All of this also applies to the Sega Master System or Atari 7800 as well.

The placement of that start button in the mega drive controller makes it look horribly ugly, but I'm guessing the engineers couldn't find any other place to put it after adding the auto fire switches.

Isn't that what I just said?

But I don't agree; "horribly ugly"? How do you figure that? It's the same size, shape and color, just placed to the left, rather than the right.

On the right, the start button flows with the angle of the ABC buttons, on the opposite side like that it sorta clashes with the flow of everything.

It's pretty easy to just move your left thumb up. It would have been far worse if they placed the start button in the middle.

Yes but as a design choice it just looks horrible.

And also I did not watch your review, so touche about what you said in it :/
