I didn't realize the SEGA name even showed. That surprises me! I guess they do hold some rights. They would be CRAZY to let that licence go completely.

Agreed, but sega was bleeding cash.

They were nuts to kill the dreamcast. They should've kept it as a low budget alternative and they would've lasted much longer. $30 instead of $50 and the dreamcast was plenty powerful.

I suspect they are still making decisions based on where they can make money and where they could cut costs. Rez isn't as big of a franchise as lets say sonic.

It's a difficult decision on whether or not to make a Rez sequel. One one hand, making a sequel would certainly please the fans, and UGA and Sega know that the game has become a cult classic. On the other hand, it has the risk of losing that status if it makes a lackluster sequel. I would personally love to see a Rez 2, but it's tough to say if it will happen or not.

I find a lot of companies don't care about making a little money they only care about making a lot of money, hence why hardcore fans are ususally served by small companies.

Rez 2 would have to be pretty good, and pretty creative, to hold the interest of the hardcore fan following Sega now has with this series. If they made too many changes, the hardcore may become upset; if they make a cookie-cutter sequel, the hardcore may become upset.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I suppose their only real question would be, "can we make money on it?"

There's a blurb in the new EGM explaining that the licensing of Rez makes it hard to do a direct sequel, but that Mizuguchi is strongly considering a "spiritual successor" ...

Sega has not been especially progressive when it comes to the new digital platforms. It's been mostly re-hashes of very old games. (Not like the well-done remake of Rez, or any number of decent-to-great remakes from Capcom, Treasure and Namco). They haven't put many new IPs out there that I can think of, or even sequels. They could do a lot of great sequels/updates.

They ought to update Streets of Rage for a fourth installment on the DL platforms. Hell I've thought for a long time they should put the true 2D Sonic game we all want on these platforms. Getting off topic ....

Otogi was one of the best new IP's Sega published, and unfortunately, I don't feel it was exploited as well as it should have been.
