Which Gradius should I play?

I'm making a list of games I ought to play and while I've played practically all Gradius titles at some point or another I have never gotten very far. Which one should I play? I would rather side with the classics than with V, so I'm not including that one on the list.

I fancy III but I get murdered. Damn, is that game hard.

Gradius Gaiden is great and thanks to being able to edit the power-up gauge, it can be made quite easy. I think it's a good place to start on the series, III and IV are good but very punishing.

I'm probably gonna get a beat down from my shmup brethren, but I did quite enjoy Gradius III on the SNES!

now you can start with the "SLOWDOWN!!11111!1111" comments. First boss rush stage I ever encountered there too. Also completed on the hidden "Arcade" difficulty (you get a fun cryptic message at the end for doing so)

Bah, whatever, Gradius III on the SNES is one of the SNES games I decided to play yearly. It's great, and since it's not as hard as the arcade version, I tend to be a bit happier playing it.

Gradius 3, has the best music and stage layouts imo, also i wasnt too thrilled with Gradius V, i had bought it at launch and have since gotten rid of it, i would just rather play Gradius 3.

I've only played the first two, but think you might as well play them in order?
The second one has one of my all-time favorite video game songs though.

I've never beaten one of them, but they're great!
