I do.Stark wrote:Who buys grapes with seeds in them any more?
Valentine's Dinner was a success. Splurged as usual, but I saved a ton of money by eating at home and not to toot my own horn, but I don't know of a restaurant in my city that even serves a lobster risotto.
My Grocery bill:
Moet Imperial $44.00
Salad for two $2.50
1 chicken lobster $10.00
Arborio rice $5.00
Vegetable stock $1.00
Ice cream $4.00
Total = $66.50
I already had Saffron, and ingredients for chiffon cake and meringue.
At a restaurant it would cost (and I'm lowballing it):
Moet Imperial $75.00
House salad (2 at $5.50) $11.00
Lobster Risotto (2 at $22.50) $45
Baked Alaska $10
Total = $141.00 before tax and tip

Why? Are they supposed to taste better or something? Because these ones tasted terrible to boot.Luke wrote:I do.Stark wrote:Who buys grapes with seeds in them any more?
Sounds really good! I know of a restaurant in Seattle that has Lobster Bisque Mashed Potatoes and they are amazing!Luke wrote: Valentine's Dinner was a success. Seedless concord grapes don't taste (to me) as good as seeded concord grapes.Stark wrote: Why? Are they supposed to taste better or something? Because these ones tasted terrible to boot.
Red seeded grapes? Blech. Concords on the other hand are worth the trouble of spitting out seeds.
The lobster risotto isn't difficult to make, but it is very time consuming. You can't leave the risotto pan for more than a few seconds, and having the lobster done at just the right time can be a bit tricky. Speaking of lobster, I've been cooking whole lobsters , eh, for around fourteen years now and have a few tips that I've learned from personal experience:
Line a cooler with newspaper, place the live lobsters in that, and cover them with a water soaked rag. Don't completely cover the bugs as you're not trying to get intel from them.
I put the lobsters in the freezer ten minutes before boiling them to "put them to sleep". Does it work? Do lobsters feel pain? Does the "sleep method" provide for a painless death?
I don't know. But I do feel like hopefully I'm alleviating some of the pain that comes with being boiled alive. You can always run a knife down the head of the live lobster, but that bad boy may still twitch for minutes. The plus side of killing it with a knife is that you can enter a skewer into it's tail so it doesn't curl while boiling, but the curling doesn't bother me a bit.
Depending on the lobsters weight, a few minutes of boiling will usually do it. Checking the color of the bug's shell. After a remove the lobster from the water, I place it on a baking sheet and roast it at 350 degrees for an extra minute or three. This does not overcook the lobster, but makes the shell either to crack, plus it removes excess moisture that makes eating lobster so messy.
And if you are going the simple "Lobster and butter" route, don't waste time with nut/lobster crackers, use a good pair of kitchen shears to open the bug up. And ask for a female lobster during purchase; the roe and tamale are delicious.

Ech. Tastes like candy. I like my grapes to taste like grapes.elmagicochrisg wrote:Nothing beats small seedless red / pink Muscat grapes...
Same reason I don't like bing cherries. They have no flavor other than sweet.
