Ikaruga. Will I like it?

Post by sonikjesus »

The reason I ask this is because I don't play top-down shooters. I've maybe played a few times at arcades here and there. I'm wooried I won't be able to appreciate it since I have nothing to compare it to, thus making me think that such a game is normal on that genre.

The same thing happened to me when HALO came out. I didn't play and fps games but I heard it was awesome. I played it and thought it was a good game (not great like everyone said) but I didn't have anything to compare it to so I thought all fps games were like that.

So, I'm worried that I will just pass off Ikaruga since it is the only game of its type I've really ever sat down and tried to play.

Ikaruga is hard, but incredibly awesome. It's not really a good entry level shooter for newcomers because of its difficulty, but there is nothing else quite like Ikaruga.

It's prequel Radiant Silvergun for the Sega Saturn is supposedly 10x better than Ikaruga. I will have the chance to play that soon enough, which I am salivating at the thought.

Anyways, just go ahead and play it, you got nothing to lose. :)

I'm not sure you can truly appreciate anything if you choose to remain ignorant. Enjoy - maybe. Appreciate - doubtful... Appreciation usually requires comparison within the genre.

are you kidding me? Ikaruga is a great entry level, thats the one that made me fall in love with shmups and made me try as many as possible to re-live my first experience with Ikaruga.

and yes radiant silvergun is better and the best in my opinion, i dont know about 10x better, but i like the graphix better, they are more artistic.

I personally hate both games, but with Ikaruga I was so hugely disappointed. It's more of a puzzler, but that's giving puzzlers a bad name, I like puzzlers.
But I'm alone, most like Ikaruga.

I don't know many puzzlers that lean heavily on split second reflexes. I don't think many would agree with your definition of Ikaruga. And actually horizontal shooters typically lean more on memorization. You can get by in Ikaruga without memorizing patterns as well, unless you are trying to keep up the combos.

Yeah, Ikaruga is an awesome shooter to get started on, it introduced me to the modern shooter a couple of years ago, and it's great value, as I still play it a couple of years on in a vain attempt to get a 1cc.

I know what u mean by puzzler, sometimes it takes some brainpower as well as split second reflexes to work out how to survive, let alone chain some kills, but that's part of what makes the game special

Oh yeah, re; Halo - I did the same thing with Half-Life, played it through as my first FPS since doom and was like, yeah, that was OK, so what... It's all about taste

I think everyone, pros and newbies, should play Ikaruga.

It is hard, but shmups aren't supposed to be easy.

Agreed. I'm going to be a jerk for a minute and say that calling Ikaruga a "puzzler" is a stupid statement.
