Is the Sonic Cycle a Myth?

Post by TheRev »

I'm a pretty huge Sonic fan I have EVERY Sonic game to have come out on the 360, and pretty much every one on the Gamecube, working on getting the US Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast (I have a Japanese copy of 2)

So while playing Sonic Adventure 2 on my 360 I got to thinking... is this Sonic Cycle thing really just a jadded fan myth? Ironically it crossed my mind playing a Knuckles stage THOSE PISS ME OFF.

When you think of BAD Sonic games what comes to mind? It's pretty much Universal 06 is bad from the story to the glitchy gameplay and terrible loadtimes. Black Knight is supposed to be bad and Sonic Heroes has Really questionable level design.

But I think that's it as far as BAD sonic games. I actually Really like Sonic Unleashed even if the warehog levels drag on too long.

But what do you think? Is the Sonic Cycle a real thing or just a myth? Or does it only refer to the period between Sonic Heroes and Sonic Unleashed?

Heroes was kinda the first game in it, Unleashed was the last. Colors and Generations broke it.

Lots of people liked the day stages in Unleashed, but hated the werewolf stuff.

Generations is great but should have been longer. I also think some of the level choices were odd. Why Rooftop run? (the Unleashed version is better I think) Why Planet Wisp? (I would have preferred Sweet Mountian but at least they put the music from that stage in the game) Why Sky Sanctuary? Why Speed Highway (which is my favorite Sonic Adventure level)

All in all though Generations is a great game.

The day stages in unleashed were great but the warehog levels don't get enough love, I think they were well laid out but they're just way too long WAY WAY too long.

Generations is fantastic, but that final boss fight was fucking stupid. What was the point of having two Super Sonics and not have anything super about the battle. I swear it felt like another team worked on the segment of the game.

Generations was fun but way too easy. Still adored it to death. Especially the Sky Sanctuary and Planet Wisp zones.

A lot of the music was done by Naofumi Hataya, of Sonic CD and Nights fame.

If anything even if a sonic game is bad you know it'll have some decent music. Only a handful of Sonic games had bad music.

Some of my faves

The cycle was very true from 2004-2007, during Sonic's dark age. Seriously, I dare you to find a "top 10 game series that need to end" or "top 10 game series that went downhill" written in that time period that does not include Sonic. Being a fan of the blue hedgehog was very frustrating back then.

Portable sonic games in that time frame were very good.

Sonic Advance 1-3
Sonic Battle (Very underrated)
Sonic Rush
Sonic Rush Adventure
Sonic Chronicles (the RPG)
Sonic Rivals 1 and 2

all very good games Sonic Rush may very well be the 2nd or 3rd best Sonic game ever.

Ok, Sonic Rush adventure may be questionable it wasn't as good as Sonic Rush.

"Very good" is subjective, but either way Sonic games are like Zelda in one respect: the portable games very much take a back seat to the main entries. The GBA and DS games don't make up for Shadow or Sonic '06, not even close.
