Lately I've been wondering - since retro gaming is big, would people buy a new 16-bit system? What I mean is, if a system was released today that had capabilities comparable to the SNES/Genesis, would it sell? It would be an interesting experiment.
I think a licensed re-release of a 16-bit system from Sega or Nintendo would sell a lot better than a fully original one.
That market is already being done. The various PlugnPlays and Bootleg consoles full of NES games.

I doubt a full fledged licensed retro console would be cost affective due to the PlugnPlays already saturated that niche. Plus all the current consoles already support retro game downloads at virtually no cost to the company in marketing the older games. This is why the next generation consoles are pushing download sales only, no overhead costs to deal with.

Halo 2 PC's online mode has been extended until June. "Halo 2 PC support extended through June 2013 while we investigate further support options," says David Ellis. I'm hoping that means they're going to let people host their own servers.

They also need to release the game either on Steam or GOG.

Brutal Legend is coming to PC! Those of you who hated how it became an RTS in the second half may like it better with a keyboard and mouse.

Hell yes! I had all but forgotten about that game but I remember I didn't buy it because RTS on console = bad. As a metal fan, I can't wait to finally try it out.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't think BoringSupreez meant a repro. I think he meant a new 2D system with new 2D games released on it. Which would be freaking incredible.

Yet another repro, would do nothing.

What would a system like that have next to retro style games on modern systems and/or low cost modern hardware like the various Android based consoles coming to market or even something like a Raspberry Pi?

With Brutal Legend actually on steam now, and multiple other games from the leak being confirmed for steam, its looking very likely that Halo 1 - 3 will hit the service at some point.

That's true. It would work on those. I just wish big name companies like Nintendo, Squaresoft, Capcom, Konami, and Sega would focus more on 2D games. New 2D JRPs, platformers, run-n-guns, beat-em ups, and shoot-em ups with the quality and polish of such companies would be amazing to see happening on a regular basis again.

It's not even out yet. And are those companies working on Ouya? Or focusing on retro-styled games?
