So are ALL Genesis 3 models incompatible with Game Genie?

Post by Flak Beard »

I was doing research and stumbled upon some comments on Amazon claiming Game Genie and 32x worked in their Genny 3's.

Are there different revisions of the system?

Yes I've heard that some people have been able to use a game genie on thier model 3....I'll have to check mine out.

But heck you can mod it to everything if you're crafty.

EDIT: link corrected

I'd rather add s-video before I do that. In fact, I might have to ask someone on this board to help with that.

I think I'm going to try and find a cheap Game Genie to test. If it doesn't work with my Genny 3, no big deal really. But now I know why my Genesis 3 was only $13 NIB.

You can already play 90% of japanese games made before 92, because the only copy protection was the cart shape and size before that. And your model 3 can fit mega drive games in no problem. I don't see why everyone fails to mention this about the "cursed" model 3!

That's true. People really knock the Genny 3, but I love mine despite a few flaws. So what Japan only games are worth getting that don't have the copy protection?

I also read somewhere that despite the Genny 3 being manufactured more cheaply, the video quality outputs better than the M1 and M2. I don't know if this is true or not though.

I wouldn't be shocked if that was the case. My Gen2 is the only system that doesn't upconvert on my HDTV well. For some reason, the NES looks fine, while the Gen has some definite bluriness and what in general looks like missing pixels. It's most noticable on Phantasy Star 4; all the menu lines are broken up. Everything looks fine on the old CRT, but it just seems so weird that the Gen looks so bad on the composite through the HDTV, while the NES still looks just fine.

A number of the Gen2 models (like mine) are the low point in Genesis manufacturing and part quality. The sound is often lower quality and the video blurrier. Durable, but a POS.

Speaking of visual quality... Old School Gamer just got back to me about doing an s-video mod to the Genny 3, but they want $99 to do it! A little too pricey for my tastes.

Anyone know of a cheaper place that will do this?
