I watched that video right before you posted it. Didn't think to post it here.

I pre-order very few things. In fact, in the last several years, there are only 3 things I've pre-ordered.

A WiiU, Fire Emblem 3DS, and Far Cry 3.

The WiiU I was excited for and systems tend to be a pretty safe bet when it comes to buying. I was a bit worried about availability.

I preordered Fire Emblem after playing the demo and finding it to be fantastic.

Far Cry 3 I preordered on the hype and my love of FC2 and that was a very bad mistake. If I could have my $50 back I would take it.

But by and large, I don't preorder, and while I can understand getting hyped for a game or system and wanting to preorder, it really probably is best to just not do it.

Rock, Paper, Shotguns take on the game: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/02 ... le-player/

"■There’s a sequence that’s clearly meant to elicit the sense of fear that Amnesia offers. You’re in a chamber of alien husks, but some of them are still alive. Their vision is based on sound, so if they come near you, you must stand perfectly still. Tense, right? Well, no, because it’s absolutely impossible to be scared of the alien’s ludicrous mincing dance-walk. It’s like a horribly operated marionette, making the whole sequence completely laughable."

"■At a certain point during development someone say, “Look, the NPC AI isn’t getting fixed, is it? They just stand in front of the player all the time. We need to do something.” “I know!” piped up a bright spark. “What if we just make it so you can shoot straight through them.” And another day finished early."

"■You have your scanner of course. Solid blips for Xenos, hollow for allies. Except, well, it can’t scan enemies until they’ve magically spawned into existence, can it? So scanning a room before entering it provides no useful information, since they won’t be triggered into reality until you cross that threshold. And thus can jump from the ceiling onto your head, where you’re already on 1 slot of health because there aren’t any medpacks since the last checkpoint seven miles back, so they instantly kill you. THAT’S FUN."

Wow, RPS's breakdown looks hilarious, videos included, gonna check this out...

At this point, yeah. I mean I even enjoyed DNF, like a few slew of us here, but this just looks and sounds truly terrible. And potentially outsourced? Wow Gearbox, lol... maybe don't put so many games on the plate at once next time.

Honestly, I don't understand why this game is getting such a bad rap. I've played it for about four hours and I'm enjoying it, though it definitely isn't perfect. The world and overall environmental detail in the game is fantastic, and while combat is somewhat lacking, the story is overall decent. Upgrading weapons is a nice touch, even if it seems a bit overdone at this point in the genre. The game can be challenging and does NOT hold your hand, which is actually a nice change from a lot of what we see today. Overall, I would say 7/10.

So I've played through the first two levels. The game is definitely growing on me. My first impressions were not positive. The general level of graphics is about Doom 3, which is pretty bad for a game 10 years later. The animations on the Xenomorphs are pretty god-awful. They switch from crawling to walking, but the walking seems more like they're sliding forward. Additionally, when Xenomorphs are attacking you there's no sense of being hit; this is especially bad if they're behind you, as you don't realize you're being attacked.

Now, all that said, the actual gameplay is pretty solid. I've enjoyed my time in the first two levels, though they don't do a good job of utilizing the scare tactics of the Xenomorphs. I'd call this a worthy buy once it goes on sale.

this is what he is referring to: http://kotaku.com/5983709/the-aliens-in ... shoot-them

how is the gameplay "solid" if the AI is horrible and the challenge potentially non-existent?

Because I didn't find the AI to be terrible.

It is because you actually played the game the way they wanted you to. The developers expect you to shoot. Much like with the Call of Duty games, if you don't do anything, you can actually have your AI teammates clear the area in most levels and not fire a shot or in the case of this Aliens game, just run through everything.
