I recently bought a new pc and of course it came with vista. It's got a quad core processor and 6 gigs of ram, but almost everyday for a couple hour period it runs super slow... slower than my P3 1gig of ram PC with XP...
Any idea why? I dont think its the virus software that is scheduled for 3am... All I know is that right now it takes minutes to open up firefox and almost five minutes to open up word, normally these open in a matter of seconds.
My hard drive light is going crazy and I cant figure out why... I am frustrated... this is the first pc in 14 years that I did not make myself and it can be super fast and miserably slow.
I know you hate it, but I have a Vista question.

Best bet is to leave the task manager open, and then watch the processes when it slows down to see what is using so many resources.

Re-format and re-install Windows. Vista isn't your problem...your PC maker is. PC makers load so much crapware on new PCs it is crazy. I can pretty much guarentee your PC will feel lightyears faster after a reformat and fresh install.
If your PC maker was to cheap to provide a real Vista re-install disc, grab one of the untouched (MSDN/OEM) from the pirate-bay and just use whatever serial came with your PC.

Assumption much?
It's possibly Vista indexing data on your hard drive. Disable hard drive indexing and see if performance improves.
Open 'Computer' from start menu. Right click on your hard drive and click properties. Then deselect 'Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching'.
See if that fixes the problem.
(btw have you installed Service Pack 1 yet?)

Its possible but I doubt thats the case considering Vista runs on the T43 fine on it w/ indexing. I would suggest making sure it has SP1 and if it does then reinstall Vista. If that doesnt work update the drivers. Also the crap that manufactures install is crazy.

Re: I know you hate it, but I have a Vista question.
You can't just assume that what works for one computer works for them all. IT could be any number of things that is causing slow performance if/when indexing. For instance RAID 5 configurations are well known to work very poorly with indexing services on Vista.
Has he said that the system has lots of crap installed on it? It's wrong to assume that this is the problem.
I'm running Vista on an athlon xp 2800 with 1GB ram and have no problems with performance at all. I even have Aero running with a 6800GT.

My system has raid 5 and it took forever to get Vista to run right so thats not out of the question. Uninstall Vista, get into the bios, and turn ALL of the raid features off. Thats what I did and now it runs like a dream, its always hard to tell w/ manufactured configurations though unless you get all the specifics, go into the windows experience index and click print and view details and past them here if you would, you can also do ctr+printscreen to take a snapshot of your display.

Not sure More Details will help. It doesn't show much that we don't already know about his setup.
We'll see if disabling indexing will help fix the problem.

Re: I know you hate it, but I have a Vista question.
Thanks for all the advise... I did the indexing and things seem better.
I just wish this 6gig rig would feel as fast as my old 3gig.
Again, thanks!
