Truth is, I'm mainly just learning the ropes and seeing what the medium is capable of, as I'd like to play a bit with gaming. Maybe focus on difficult themes or play with genre concepts. This is mostly for me.

Heck, all I'm doing right now is fairly simple: a kid is in his tree house and is asked to come down by his mother, so he must get down by finding the devices which will get him down a couple of levels out of the tree. Simple, straightforward, let's me get a basic idea. I might let a few of you guys play it for laughs when I finish, but I have no idea when that will be, and I certainly don't expect it to be much of anything beyond me passing it around to friends.
On the technical front, you will save yourself a lot of grief if you architect it well from the get go. You probably want to make the game very data driven, so that what runs it is very generic and you can plug in the data for any map + puzzles + items and it'll just work.

Actually I'm using a generic program called Quest that was designed to facilitate relatively easy construction, mainly because I am horrendous at writing code and have never been that big on it.

Quest looks to be a pretty good engine, especially for entry level creation. I am gonna mess around with this bad boy and see where it takes me. Thanks for showing me this thing.

I loved Planetfall but never finished it.

the only text adventure I ever finished was HHGTTG and that was mostly accomplished using the book for reference. It did inspire me to read the entire series though, so the whole experience was definitely worthwhile.

Ahh, that sounds like what I suggested, but all the hard parts of building the skeleton have already been done for you.
