Games with deep story lines.

Post by floattube »

Looking for some games I can get lost in while playing it. They are my favorite.

My favorite games of all time are Shenmue 1 and 2, and L.A. Noire. I just love games that tell a story instead of being all about action. I've been suggested Heavy Rain, anyone have any other ideas?

Counter Strike

Well, maybe not. But these are pretty great.

Sleeping Dogs?
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning
Dishonored <
The Witcher 2
Deus Ex: Human Revolution <

Especially the 2 I pointed at. Don't scoff at the first person view point, both of those games are fantastic stealth games with great environments and stories, with lots of hidden notes and other things that flesh out the already stunning worlds.

The question mark next to Sleeping Dogs is because for the half hour I've played it the story seems pretty strong. However, I've only played it a half hour. So I can't really say if it keeps it up.

I’m not sure “deep” is entirely accurate, but I really liked the story to Breakdown. One of the better sci-fi stories in a video game.

Heavy Rain's plot is barely worthy of airport thriller, and has such a glaringly hole in its whole 'game as narrative' approach that you just feel ripped off, considering the amount of time you've invested in it by then.

Very good idea, failed by outright broken storytelling. It is worth playing, for its sheer ambition, but that's about all you're gonna get.

From what I've seen, Red Dead Redemption does what is says on the tin, and whilst not an genre-breaker in terms of story, it does very well with what it tells, and it serves the atmosphere of the game itself very well.

Psychonauts plays out like all good comedies do, with plenty of heart and chutzpah.

Point being less 'depth', more along the lines of well-done and satisfying.

In what way was Heavy Rain broken in its story telling? While it had some plot holes, it was pretty straightforward to me.

If anything, the voice acting in the US version ruined it.

I REALLY recommend Ni No Kuni on the PS3 - I finished it tonight and it's a fantastic game. Very engrossing story, great artwork/graphics, gameplay is addictive and genuinely fun.

The reveal of The Origami Killer. It tried to play with a cinema trope it didn't understand, and had you play though essentially a redundant fantasy section to get to it. Of course, I'm referring to the Clock Shop scene, and how pretends to be an editing trick, when it's in fact a daydream sequence. Then there's the idea that Shelby called the cops on himself, and implicates himself a crime...

It was competent to that point, mostly. Well, beyond the idea that Jayden could only deal with one piece of evidence at a time, Madison inexplicably falling in love, or well, the fact she appears shocked to hear the killer's name, yet hadn't met, nor mentioned, him 'til that point in the game. Actually, hold on.......

The Clock Shop scene was a daydream? In what sense? I though he killed the owner to hide evidence, then pretended the Origami Killer snuck in the back, when in reality it was him. Hence convincing the person he was with that he couldn’t possibly be the killer, since he was basically pretending to frame himself. I get it that it was weird, but by saying it was a “daydream” are you saying that it never happened? If that is true, I must have seriously missed something.
