oXbox Modding Trouble.. Can't get XBMC to boot

Post by 11dfrazier »

Just as the title states. It freezes at the splash screen. I've attempted to boot with both sticks clicked in to restore default settings, and I've also started with white+y and that gave me something like 'XBMC has suffered a fatal error'. I've literally deleted/ installed/ re installed almost every distro of the application and I can't get it to boot past the initial screen. Googling does me no good because there are a million things that run XBMC now. This is driving me crazy. Everything else I've done to this Xbox has worked perfectly except for this.

Has anyone else run in to this problem? How'd you fix it?

Open to all advice, help, etc. I really wanna get this running soon!

Are you using the soft-mod or do you have a modchip installed?

Softmod. I used the Splinter Cell save exploit.

Have you tried installing a different dashboard like UnleashX? Does it work?

The other thing to check is your hard drive. I wonder if it has bad sectors or something like that?

I actually already have Unleash X installed. I've tried running XBMC as a dash and a app but neither work.

How would I check to see if the hard drive has bad sectors though?

You would have to pull the drive out and run some sort of hard disk verification utility on it. The easiest way would be to use an IDE<->USB adapter.

I had trouble with a phat PS2 & HD Loader where some games would run and others would just hang/quit. The problem turned out to be a hard disk with lots of bad sectors.

That's the only explanation that I have why XBMC does not work.

How large is your hard disk and how full is it?

If there's not much on it, maybe you could put some large *.zip files or whatever to fill up the disk and then put xbmc. The idea is to try to use a different area of the disk to see if it behaves better. If it does, then it's definitely the hard disk.

I can't remember if you can do this but you could also try putting xbmc on a dvd and seeing if unleash can boot it.

oh man, be careful. IDE > USB doesn't always work with XBOX hard drives. I've literally pulled my hair out over XBOX drives, and the only sure fire solid way that I have ever found to be 100% is to use an actual IDE cable from your PC and slave into the XBOX drive with software to run checks.

Even that is super hit and miss. (Or at least has been in my experience.)

The most fool proof way of doing anything is using Xbox HDM in DOS, with no other drives attached to the PC except the xbox drive with IDE. I actually had to build an old computer just to mod xboxes. LOL. Old Pentium 3 goodness. LOL.

Anyway, having said that, there is this program called Chimpy or something like that (I can't look it up right now because I'm at work) that seems to do OK under Windows, with the Xbox drive slaved on an IDE channel. Most current motherboards don't even have IDE anymore though, so this is where you run into the USB converter solution. Again, it "can" and does work, but not always so you absolutely must have patience when going this route because it can be tedious.
