I recently bought a racketboy modchip for my model 2 64 pin Saturn (non Sanyo). Installing was easy enough, the only quirk of the system is that if I place a disc in the cd drive (Original or backup), it takes me to the audio CD screen where I simply have to pop the lid and close it again to get the start application option and everything is fine.
So, onto my issue, I have been pulling my hair out over some games and just bought an Action replay plus 4 in 1 to use some codes. The problem is, when I boot the system w/ the AR in the cart slot and cd in the drive, it goes to the standard AR screen where I can select cheats and so on. When I try to start the disc though, it simply says Loading... and freezes there (original OR backup). I tried popping the lid and shutting it to no avail.
So, by this logic, the AR is a total waste because I would be unable to play my official copy of Metal Slug even.
Does anyone know of a workaround? Do I need to buy a 32pin Saturn?
Help me oh wise ones!!

I am going to guess your laser is beginning to fail.
Get out a multimeter and take note of your resistance, and lower the resistance by 50-100.
Then test again.

So what does it do with the mod chip out and the AR in?

Ok, so I think I got it working. All I needed to do was, at the AR screen, pop the lid and shut it again. After that the games load like a charm!
Strange that my Saturn mod always requires the lid to be opened and shut before working... Anyone else have that problem?
BTW, I tried taking the mod chip out and booting w/ the AR and it works normally as expected, so I don't think it's a lens/laser issue.

Maybe something to do with the fact you're on a 64 pin Saturn making it extra funky. At least you have a workaround without having to tweak anything.

This (having to open/close the lid) is "normal" on the 64pin IC boards. If you hadn't figured it out, I would have pointed you to this post:

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
