Edge is reporting it False

My locked thread about how I'm sick of these rumors say it all. Nothing but bullshit.

But this rumor has been circulating for about a year now by industry insiders. If it were completely false, I'm sure someone would have shot it down by now.

you are forgetting that neither Sony or MS has even confirmed that there is a new console coming, so addressing features would be premature.

The dev kits have been out for both consoles for quite awhile now. This is the information age. Word gets around fast, trust me

Everyone 'in the know' says it's true. So I'm inclined to believe them until I hear otherwise

Pros: Maybe this will stop/hinder the plague that is GameStop?

Cons: Everything else.

As much as I love my 360 the no 'used' games is a deal breaker for me getting the 720.

If this does become true for both microsoft and sony then I hope the WiiU mops up the gaming market this gen

I started thinking perhaps MS or Sony spread this rumour around themselves to try and extract a public reaction? This way they can see what gamers think, and if the feedback is too negative, they'll come out and say the rumour was false. If it's positive, they'll confirm the rumour. Might be a nice way of testing the waters without officially doing so?

Seems unlikely. I can't foresee any gamer being pleased about this. So they are gauging between dislike or apathy. This would be done to please publishers. They don't need circulated rumors to test those waters.

I can imagine this being executed in a similar way to some current games online passes myself. I don't think either Sony or Microsoft would want to risk losing business with retailers either, so I can imagine second hand sales still being possible, but requiring an additional pass to play them - only the pass unlocks all of the content here, rather than just online modes like how it works currently.

That makes sense, but its still annoying. It'll be tacking on an extra however much they want to charge for the pass on top of whatever you pay for a given used game. And since it would be full game rather than just an online mode, I don't think the price would be all that attractive.

Imagine paying 20 bucks for a used game, and then another 20 bucks for the pass to unlock it. Suddenly you're not saving much.

Of course I pulled a number out of my ass there, but I just don't see them charging a fiver you know? The online passes now go for 10 as it is.

I remember looking up how much it would cost me to get a new CD key for Diablo 2 when I bought a used copy that was missing the paperwork. They wanted $20, and I'm sure that's about what it would cost to re-activate used games if they were locked.
