Party-less JRPG's?

Post by Opa Opa »

I've been meaning to make this thread for a while.

Sometimes I don't feel like party management. What are some JRPG's that involve only role-playing one character?

All I can think of are Dragon Warrior 1 and most Ys games.
Are there any other titles out there?

The YS series is fantastic and every game in the series has given me an awesome experience.

Other great games I can suggest are:

Brave Fencer Musashi, Megaman Legends series, Vagrant Story, Shining Wisdom, Sword of Mana, Popful Mail, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, Survival Kids, Bastion

In Final Fantasy Adventure (and the remake Sword of Mana) you play as one character.

There's also The 7th Saga. You start as one character and later have the option to recruit one (and only one) more. But it's entirely optional - you can solo the whole game.

I don't believe you have a party in any of the classic Enix action-RPGs: Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, and Brain Lord. I could be wrong though.

I don't think you have a party in Lagoon either.

Far as I can tell, "party-less JRPGs" are more likely to be action-RPGs rather than turn-based.

Would Nier qualify? I've only seen gameplay (which looks awesome), and it looked like only one character.

I don't know if you'd consider Phantasy Star Online, since its more of a multi-player experience, but if you have someone to play with (Split-screen GC style or online via BB), the game is damn fun.

Yes I'd say Nier certainly fits the bill. Real time action oriented combat, but everything else about it bleeds JRPG awesomeness.

You are alone in most of the From Software RPGs. King's Field series, Shadow Tower series, Eternal Ring, Evergrace series, Demon's/Dark Souls.

Alundra, Landstalker, and Dark Savior also come to mind.

Some more: Sword of Vermilion, Beyond Oasis/Defenders of Oasis/The Legend of Oasis, Light Crusader, Crusader of Centy, and the Hydlide games.

Technically, Nier has a party. It ends up being 3 total people with no option for switching out though, and your party members are borderline useless in combat.

They do not require management and are NPCs though, so the criteria still fits.
