Yup. This "everyone in America has good internet now, right?" assumption is infuriating. Here in rural Maine internet connections are intermittent on a good day. On a rainy day (not a storm, just a regular ass rainy day) they'll cut in and out. Always-on DRM already caused me to skip over several decent PC titles (Diablo III, for instance).MrEco wrote: If both of those are true, or even just the always online part, then I can guarantee you I won't be buying the Nextbox. I have a better than average internet connection, and even I can't always have guarantee'd internet access. It cuts out randomly sometimes, especially during bad weather.

I have a feeling that Microsoft is under pressure from publishers to do this and that this is a "feature" that is going to vanish before the next xbox is even officially revealed.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

This is most likely what's going to happen, but we really won't know anything until the system actually hits stores I think.Flake wrote:I have a feeling that Microsoft is under pressure from publishers to do this and that this is a "feature" that is going to vanish before the next xbox is even officially revealed.
Even in the current slump (which I attribute to fatigue from an unusually long generation), gaming as an industry is bringing in more revenue than it did at any point during the entirety of the Ps2 era. Seems to me like a strange time to suddenly start going after the used market.
Re: No Used Games On Xbox 3
They're not fooling anyone. Even if they say officially that they're dropping the "always online" requirement, I still wouldn't trust them because they'll probably have the feature built in, but not enabled. Then, all they have to do is wait a couple years, sell a few million consoles and enable it via a mandatory firmware update that downloads automatically in the middle of the night when no one's looking. I wouldn't put it past them to be that sneaky. Not for a second.

Whaaa? bit of a sky is falling slippery slope you have going on here.Weekend_Warrior wrote:If the greedy bastards would just bring down the prices of new games to an honest, respectable level like $19.99, then piracy and used games would be far less of an issue! More game companies would sell games and continue to stay in business while the consumers get to enjoy their systems without "being carded" and treated like a potential thief/hacker just because they want to play a damn video game!
Also, what happens to the games that people beat and no longer want - are they supposed to just throw them away? We paid $60+ for it, beat it after a few days, now it's completely worthless? Now we just send it to the landfill and go buy another?? Not everyone collects games ya know
Lemme tell ya somethin, if they start that shit then that means all game developers that are making 'just average' or 'sub-par' games will indefinetly go under because GAMERS WILL BECOME A LOT MORE SELECTIVE ABOUT THE GAMES THAT THEY DO BUY AND PLAY ONLINE WHEN THEY ARE FORCED TO PAY FULL RETAIL PRICE EVERY TIME! There will still be game sales and price cuts I'm sure, but by that time the game developer and/or publisher could already be treading water or having its doors close.
*Regarding mandatory online connection* Seriously, what's next... you can't start your car until you check in with Chevrolet's GPS tracking system first?
Games do drop in price all the time. And the GS used game prices are usually only a couple dollars below the new price.

What's also possible is that the system will have the capability of locking games down like that if the publisher wants.AppleQueso wrote: This is most likely what's going to happen, but we really won't know anything until the system actually hits stores I think.
Still, simple fact is that the sales model has worked for basically every other software market already (and music, and ebooks, and so on). It works for the current direct-download market on consoles. It's not like when divx flopped and it was obvious that consumers would not go for the business model. Non-transferrable digital sales have been more or less embraced by the market.
Re: No Used Games On Xbox 3
Actually, that's the exact reason I DON'T want to pay for digital downloads. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't count as "officially released" unless they release it on some kind of physical medium so I can purchase a hard copy if I so choose. And I'm sure I'm not alone on that, either.isiolia wrote:Non-transferrable digital sales have been more or less embraced by the market.

I love my physical media, and will always buy that if available, but honestly saying that digital releases don't "count" is a pretty antiquated way of thinking. Some of the best games this generation have been digital download only, and I see no reason to expect that trend to not continue.Retrodude wrote:Actually, that's the exact reason I DON'T want to pay for digital downloads. Re: No Used Games On Xbox 3
I prefer being able to buy a physical copy too, just pointing out that consumers as a whole have far from balked at the concept of a digital product they can't resell. iTunes just hit what, 25 billion sales?Retrodude wrote:Actually, that's the exact reason I DON'T want to pay for digital downloads. Just saying the logic of "nobody will go for this" is flawed, seeing as how hundreds of millions of people, if not billions, already have. At this point, it's not some experimental thing, and more changing over to a different, already successful business model.
