Beating more of the same games I beat every year. But I'm fine with that as I love 'em and still enjoy playing them.
Nabbed all the chaos emeralds in both games with ease. Sonic 2 almost makes it too easy to nab all the emeralds as I believe I had either five or six of them by the time I got to level two. I may as well go ahead and beat Sonic CD while I'm at it.
I own it, but have never really played Sonic and Knuckles and I've never played Sonic 3.
Both are worth playing, but I am in the minority that sees Sonic>Sonic 2>Sonic CD>Sonic 3>S&K

Is playing Sonic3 and Knuckles any different from just playing Sonic 3, and then just popping in Sonic & Knuckles after?
Yes. The last boss of Sonic 3 gets cut out if Sonic & Knuckles is attached. Plus, S&K can't save on it's own. Sonic 3 has the save battery, so if you play S&K alone you have to beat it in one go.
And the true ranking of the Sonic games is Sonic CD > Sonic 2 > Sonic 3 & Knuckles > Sonic 1. Kinda funny that Sonic CD is my favorite, considering that Sonic 1 is my least favorite and Sonic CD plays more like the original than any of the others. It feels like the true Sonic 2.
