best NES and GBA turn based games?

Post by nickfil »

I just jailbroke my iphone to install a nes and a gba emulator.

Now- its the iphone. The touch screen isn't really great for platform or action gaming like super mario brothers and is only ok for games like tetris. But, where it does cater to turn based games that require saving. I am having a ball with fire n' ice. And advance wars is on deck.

SO my question to you racketers is this:

what are your favorite turn based games on the NES and GBA?

NES:

Dragon Warrior series
Final Fantasy series
Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters. You play the military trying to keep out the monsters, turn based strategy

The rest on the NES are Japanese only, like Fire Emblem and Famicom Wars, and as far as I know, the only one that ever got a translation was Fire Emblem Gaiden.

GBA:

Final Fantasy series
Advance Wars 1 & 2
Fire Emblem Series
Shining Force
Dragon Quest Monsters Caravan Heart (fan translation was finished not too long ago)
Pokemon series

Tactics Ogre and Rebelstar are both very good turn based games that haven't been mentioned yet.

Oh yeah, can't believe I left off Mother aka Earthbound Zero as an NES RPG.

For GBA:
SRPGs:
Tactics Ogre - I just started it again Saturday night and I have loved every minute of it.
Fire Emblems - nothing has to be said about these.
Zone of the Enders: Fist of Mars - Like Front Mission but in the ZoE universe.

Traditional RPGS:
Golden Sun 1&2 - Not as good as hype suggested but still quite enjoyable.
Magical Vacation - Brownie Browns debut.
Ports - Lufia, FFI,II,IV,V,VI, Lunar, etc.
Pokemon - Just imagine them as 1 on 1 rpgs.
Riviera: The Promised Land - RPG, SRPG, Dating sim, all in one - atleast give it a look.

I actually would tend to tell people to avoid Lufia on the GBA, as it's only tangentally related to the actual Lufia story. And the game mechanics weren't all that much to write home about either.

I think I will enjoy Fire emblems, unfortunately haven't got round to playing those.
Fist of Mars is good.

Tactics Ogre? It is GREAT - I love that game.

In my opinion, Golden Sun is the greatest GBA RPG ever, and definitely in the top 10 portable RPG's ever. Amazing graphics/animations, breathtaking soundtrack, great story, terrific battle system, and just an overall perfect RPG.
