Any interest in playing Doom 2 online?

Post by DinnerX »

Update: Doom 2 deathmatch on Crucified Dreams will be taking place at 9:00 PM central time. It's not too late to tell me if you are interested. PMs with the server IP and password will be sent out sometime Saturday.

With enhanced Doom engines like Zandronum, it's fairly easy to play DooM online. I am curious how many people would be interested in getting together and playing DooM 2.

I was thinking co-op on a challenging PWAD initially (standard doom is too easy with extra players IMO), but depending on the number of people interested that could turn into cramped, ammo starved mess. Most deathmatch maps, on the other hand, can be played with a fairly large number of people and still provide a decent experience. Zandronum also adds CTF and a horde mode if either of those sound interesting.

I can run the server, but my internet connection speed isn't stellar, so if a considerable number of members are interested we might want to hop on an empty public server instead.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

EDIT: Guide on Zandronum and Doomseeker posted here http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 52&t=41723 Feel free to ask questions.

Also, as BoringSupreez said, essentially any PC version of Doom 2 will work as they all have the .wad files needed. If you don't have Doom 2 you can play with us using Freedoom 0.6.4.

If we can get people together and someone can walk me through it, that'd be pretty cool. I also have Doom 2 on Xbox 360.

^Would a step-by-step with pics help? I could post it in the guides subforum.

It shouldn't matter what PC version of Doom 2 you have, whether it be DOS, Win95, or Steam. They've all got the .wad files, so if anyone has the game they should be set.

I'd be up for this myself, but I'm back on my two-rocks-and-a-string internet connection. It's fun though, don't let Doom's age make you think it won't be any good online!

Count me as a maybe. I'd love to play Death Match or Capture the Flag, but I'm not sure I can really commit to anything right now. Perhaps if I have enough notice.

Alright, looks like it'll be Goldfish (if he's still interested), Lone Wanderer, GSZX1337, and me.

I imagine I can host 3 people over this connection. I've hosted 2 before and there were no problems, and Zandronum has pretty low requirements. How does deathmatch on Crucified Dreams sound? It's a pretty good deathmatch wad.

What times would work best for people? Would sometime next weekend work?

EDIT: Are you on Steam Lone Wanderer? It'd be handy to be able to chat with you whenever we do this.

EDIT: I'll record a demo and make a video of the match to put on youtube, if that's alright with everyone who ends up playing. The server will be on a second computer I have so recording shouldn't affect the match.

Sign me up! I would love to play online with you guys! I never actually played the second doom, although the first was played religiously as a kid thanks to the wonderful world of shareware. Once we get that all going. I would love to do some recordings for posterity. Maybe if someone has a good internet connection we could put up a stream for others to watch?
