Saturn Sports games (Specifically Hockey and Soccer)

Post by TheRev »

It does seem the Dreamcast is the system to go to. Virtua Striker is on the Dreamcast, not sure if it got a Saturn port. The NFL2k games are the go to football games obviously. I have NHL2k2 but I understand the Saturn may have a few NHL gems.

So, what's out there on the Saturn?

In the 100th issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, the editors picked Worldwide Soccer '97 as one of the greatest games of all time. I picked up a copy recently, and it is very good. I have read, however, that the sequel, Worldwide Soccer '98, is even better.

You really should do that. During its heyday, EGM had the best writers and most honest reviewers in the business. The "best games of all time" list in EGM 100 has yet to be surpassed by any other gaming publication, and it is great resource for locating some of the best games on the PS1 and Saturn.

I have EA's NHL '97 and NHL All-Star Hockey for the Saturn. Neither are as good as NHL '94 on the Sega CD.

Yeah Issue 100 had Tetris as #1 150 had Super Metriod.
No idea what the logic behind that is

EGM was my gaming bible back in the day. I remember in their 1994 buyers guide they said "Owning a Saturn will be like owning your own arcade" That stuck with me all these years and now I have one probably just for that statement.

Yeah I'm probably thinking I should just stick to HHL2k2 on the Dreamcast
Which I have yet to really dig into and play.

the sports games i swore by when i was actively collecting saturn games were

football - Madden NFL '98
baseball - World Series Baseball '98
bastketball - NBA Action '98
soccer - Worldwide Soccer '98
hockey - NHL All-Star Hockey '98 (some people prefer the older one but i like the 3D polygonal players for some reason...)
tennis - Break Point Tennis
golf - VR Golf '97 (i have yet to find a better golf game for any 32-bit system)

Decathlete and Winter Heat are both worth it as well.

Different editorial staff and changing tastes. They are both very good lists - particularly if you don't pay attention to the rankings - but the list in issue 100 was full of so many great, under-rated games.

I recently got Fifa 98 Road to the World Cup. I haven't played it on my Saturn yet but my friend and I used to play that for hours on PSX when we were kids.

I also have been playing a LOT of NBA Jam T.E. lately.

I am not much of a sports gamer admittedly.

I'm not either but I want to broaden my gaming knowledge Sports games are looked at as disposable titles (Even by EA now) But good games are good games. Even if they're sports titles.
