Advice for F-Zero GX on Gamecube

Post by marurun »

So, I finally got my hands on this title and dug in, only to find the controls are way to sensitive, at least on the craft I picked. I was ricocheting off the walls WAY too much. Anybody have some advice for a starter craft and accel/max speed balancing that makes a vehicle manageable with the GC stock controller?

The Blue Falcon really -is- good for beginners in this game. It's heavy and durable, but corners well enough for the first half of the game.

As for the steering - get used to it. This game requires a lot of precision. If the controls weren't as sensitive as they are, you'd never be able to play on the later levels.

My advice for F-Zero GX is "abandon all hope, ye who enter here".

The only winning move is not to play.

Seriously.

Love the game, love the style, love the Sega touch on a Nintendo franchise, but so much to do and unlock! Very difficult! Amazed I made it past the first 3 Story missions...

Having thought the exact same thing when I first began playing this game I can tell you that practice really does help you get a better feel for this game. You have to abandon the notion that every other racing game has taught you, that you can tap one direction fully and only turn a little bit.

You need to move all the analog controls only a little bit. In the earlier levels enter corners by moving your analog stick at most half way to the edge. Add to this the tiniest amount of airbrake from the triggers. Once you get used to these subtle movements you will find that by varying degrees of steering and airbrake you can make it around most corners (until you have to learn to drift, but that's for another day  )

Sorry if I sound like a dick, just genuinely trying to help

I spent a whole lot o' time playing this game when it came out. Not much since, though.

I usually use the Blue Falcon, and set the balance to 3/4 toward acceleration, then boost to win. Aim for the charge and boost pads, and boost as much as you can without putting yourself in a situation where you'll die instantly. Practice your lines, and learn the stages a little bit. You should be fine from there. It's a pretty difficult game at first, no matter what you do. Try playing with some other people, so you can be frustrated together. :D

EDIT: Also, as kiteJargon said, you're eventually going to need to be able to drift.

This may be my problem. I appreciate analog control, but with the small analog thumb nubs most controllers provide, I find it too fiddly to really perform nuanced actions. I compensated on the Dreamcast and Saturn by pushing the analog nub forward to the top of its range and simply rolling it a little left or right to give me a wider range of stick motion with a more graduated response, but it seems that trick doesn't work in F-Zero.

Is there a particular type of controller that might help with this? I don't mind having a larger range of motion if it means a more graduated response.

Buy a steering wheel...

Really, just pick the Falcon and do the first few tracks until you can feel the groove. Like pierrot and kitejargon said, it just takes time. Its an excellent racing game if you can give it the time you have to have to play it. But it is unforgiving on many aspects. I really wish it had BBA support - since it doesnt I am just waiting for Dolphin to support Fzero AX and Lan play before I dive back into the game.
