I have a HP F2240 All-In-One, been using it for like 3+ years now, works great, unless its out of ink...

Bought it from Target for $40 on sale

And how much does a set of ink carts cost you for those 4 or 5 prints you'll make that month? :P

I'm sure you remember, Hobie, but that's the shit I have to deal with right now. My current printer will refuse to scan if there's an empty or missing ink cart. Years ago, I found a work around online (a button combination that you press in a specific order) but I couldn't get it to work the last time I tried it.

That link I gave said some can be forced to work if you use the built in Windows capture stuff.

I remember dealing with a printer like that. It left me speechless when it refused to scan because it was out of ink.
Mines that way :P. Haven't ever really had issue with it though. I always have at least 1 spare cart of each type stored for emergencies.

What? That's just hogshit. It's like a car stereo not playing because there's no gas in the tank.

The printer isn't that black and white about it, but that IS the situation. What happens, with my printer at least, if there's a missing ink cart or a cart that's empty it throws an error code which basically locks up the entire unit. So you basically can't use it until you replace the cart.

What sucks is that I got away with refilling the ink carts a bunch of times, but you eventually get to the point where you can't refill it anymore (no way around the error code without replacing the cart).

I've thought about ditching this stupid thing and just getting a scanner (and probably a better scanner at that!) because I do have another printer in the house, but it's just too damn convenient having a printer up here because the other one is downstairs. I could get a nice compact laser printer, but then I'd have no scanner up here.

It wouldn't be so bad if the ink wasn't crazy expensive. Refilling them saves you a lot of money, but you have to deal with the hassle of refilling them. You can get remanufactured carts at about half the price usually, but I will never buy one of those again. Last time I got them, the print quality of colored prints was much lower and they didn't even last as long. They're about half the price, but they last half as long, so what's the point?

If I had the room up here I'd get myself a nice color laser printer and a separate scanner, but I don't. If I didn't need a scanner, and was just looking for the best printer to get, I would go with a laser.

Glad to see the OP is looking at a Brother. In my experience these are nice dumb postscript printers. Just please stay away from anything HP. Any printer with a 300mb driver is going to cause you pain.

HP software has always been a pain in the ass at least with the lower end printers I've used from them in the past.
