I doubt he knew anything about these legal drugs, but I don't know if he was ignorant about them or not. I doubt he was ignorant about marijuana use and its effects since practically everyone knows of that. Is a parent supposed to know about every drug out there and the effects of each? We don't know if he had a sit down with her about "don't put shit in your body", we do know that he had rules in place about marijuana use which suggests he likely did talk to her about that. Again, we don't know.Blu wrote: I'm sorry, but "ignorance is bliss" doesn't fly considering these circumstances. Most people know the effect of marijuana on the body, even if they've never used it. You could definitely make a safe assumption that you'll have no idea what "x" does when you put it in your body and you shouldn't be your friend's guinea pig when it's time for the teenager drug experiment.
Yes, but there is so MUCH out there and so MUCH of it changes so rapidly that you can't expect him to know about everything. Again, the "don't put shit in your body" talk should cover all bases, and we don't know if he had that discussion but, given that he had rules about pot use, it seems likely he did have it.isn't it a parent's responsibility to make children be aware of what's out there? Especially when the federal law is having a hard time keeping these substances out of storefronts. Hell, you can even do it in a way that isn't overbearing.

*insert "If weed were legal this shit wouldn't happen speil" here.
In highschool a lot of kids started using that K2/Spice stuff. After a few wound up in the hospital it was pretty much universally stopped aside from the few dipshits that still thought it being legal was preferable to something illegal that wouldn't cause permanent brain damage.
I hope that schools will begin to teach this in their health programs. I certainly wasn't taught about it 3 years ago.

just saw this...Blu wrote: EDIT: I'm fine with moving on, but if you want to keep chatting about this Dave, we can.
we can move on as now we're getting into a discussion of "What is good preemptive parenting?" as regards drugs, and that is an area where I think we'd find a lot of agreement. Basically my point was that we don't know enough about this specific situation to have any reason to think this guy's a bad father, and all the suggestions that he is are based on assumptions about things that did or did not take place.
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
Right, I think we're on the same page. I understand where your argument is rooted, and I agree that it's unfair to make assumptions about the guy. If the step-dad took the stance "She got what she deserved," we could easily be more founded in those assumptions. However he's already kicking himself about the situation in general, and he's probably retracing all of the steps he took. I'd contend that it's not my assertion that he's to blame, but in a round-about way this whole discussion is yet another thing to be mindful of when it comes to the children we raise or will raise one day.

This...dsheinem wrote:Where's the failure in parenting? He had had "not condoned" smoking, apparently explained consequences of being caught smoking (including grounding), and he was upset enough to want to beat up the person who sold it to her (which of course turned out to be a gas station attendant who did so legally).
"Her stepfather, who has been in Emily's life since he saw her in the delivery room, hopes he can spare other people his family's pain."
He seems like a pretty decent guy who's just struggling with a bad choice his stepdaughter made despite his efforts to try and get her not to. This is a VERY common scenario for anything parents don't want kids to do. Am I missing something?
Exactly what I was thinking, but said in a less snarky way than I would've said it. Heh...
Nothing wrong with this dad...

I blame tektoro for Gta 5 being delayed. I wonder if they are going to use a new engine? All the numbered games have used a different engine (I think can't remember 2 that well.) I mean the rage engine in 4 would fine with me if used in 5 but there's something about that new engine smell that just gets me.ninjainspandex wrote:apparently due to shipping issues Fire Emblem awakening might be delayed till friday, and i was so looking forward to this game. At least its not as bad as my wait for GTA V, that got moved back to sept.
