In an interview with Keiji Inafune, he said he would love to make more retro-themed games; he just needs to see how the public reacts to them, first.

Would it ever be possible for Sega of Japan and Sega of America to split into more separate entities? I don't think I've ever been impressed by SoA's efforts, although they seem to generate more profit. Maybe they could stay under the same house, but work more separately. They seem to be two very different companies to me. If they did this, I think that SoA could generate the big profits while SoJ could keep the fanboys happy.
That's a bit too wishful thinking though, isn't it?

yeah but i't SoA that could save the saturn with sonic extreme but it was the idiot Yuji Naka who said they can't use his engine or he'll leave. What? Why did he care? The only thing I can think of is he was a rasist fuck and didn't want those nasty westerners to be using the tech his team made (which is unthinkable for a corporation not to share technology between it's departmens)

Touche'. I'm not very schooled in the history of Sonic Xtreme, though what I know is very interesting, if tragic. I wonder then, why didn't they just tweak the Sonic R or Sonic Jam engines and make a game out of it?

The man wasn't consulted at all according to this editorial. I'm interesting in actual interviews that squarely placed the blame on Yuji Naka for this. Two weeks after delivery of the [NiGHTS] engine, it turned out that Naka hadn’t been consulted. He protested at his work being given to STI and as a result the NiGHTS technology was withdrawn. The team was back to square one. Or rather it was back to square one minus fourteen days.

That's such a CRYING shame about the original fish-eye lens being scraped because Nakayama saw a different build of the game. Honestly, I think Yuji might've been discouraged from the terrible concept builds... maybe. I don't know. Yuji Naka's created two of the greatest characters of all time in Sonic and NiGHTS, but he's such an idiot sometimes (i.e. refusing any last hope of a Sonic X-Treme, and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg). Honestly, I'm glad they didn't release the game with the NiGHTS engine, though; it seems like it would've been absolutely nothing next to the fish-eye build.
