Post proof that you're passing retro on to the kids!

Kiddos are on a real retro kick the past few weekends. We don't let them game much, if at all, during the week, so the past couple weeks during the week they've been asking, "Can we play SNES, can we play 64 this weekend" etc. Been pretty cool.

Why no gaming during the week? That rule is just weird to me.

I wasn't allowed to play games much during the week, until I completed my studies. When there wasn't a limit, I tended to get off-balance. I certainly won't speak for mjmjr25, but it depends. I valued having that structure when future time management came into play, like the freedom of college, or balancing work/life.

mjmjr25: Gotta love Sarge's Heroes. A shooter without gratuitous violence, kids love it. Looks like your littlest is sitting out, do they handle taking turns pretty well? Congrats too on your daughter's inventor fair win!

@Samurai: kids get home from school, "forget homework for now, I'm gonna get farther in Super Mario RPG!" Just a way to help curb bad habits. I didn't have that kind of restriction going up, but if I had kids I'd probably at least consider implementing something like that.

I remember loving the Army Men franchise back then. Played them all a ton with my cousin.

If he's doing what I think he's doing, the youngest there is too young to play, so the controller is unplugged, but since the other two are playing, it makes it seem as if they're playing right along.

I need to post some pics of my kids playing but in my house we have a homework comes before pretty much anything rule and they know and understand that. My 4th grader is easily distracted so nothing electronic can really go on until she's done anyway so we mostly game on weekends anyway.

My oldest is reading a Justice Unlimited TPB today which she read through last night, after getting it, and is reading through from the beginning again today (she loves comic books and video games).

Yeah, on top of homework, etc, it's just good balance. My oldest daughter (9) and youngest son (5) would do art, music, imaginitive play, or reading on their own w/o structure. My oldest son (7) if given the option, would play any gaming system 24/7, and that just isn't healthy. That sort of one dimensional experience stunts growth in other areas and will make not only school more difficult on the social end, but also stunt skills needed to have many career options, etc.

Also, I think it's pretty lazy parenting to just stick kids in front of a console. But, I digress.

Yeah, I def. prefer the army men series. Doesn't have the language of some modern franchises, or the gore / realism of something like Goldeneye.

Chris, yeah, my daughter's pad is not plugged in, this is the baby trick of course. It has to be the right pad for the system, otherwise they catch on. This works with wired consoles, but not with wii or ps3, since they can still turn 'em on, so retro is best for the babies. That said, the past few times she's been picking up that she isn't controlling anyone. Just last night she turned around sadly and said, "where my guy?"

Thanks on the comment about my daughter the inventor The state finals are actually in St. Paul next month, so she's pretty excited. They get a month to upgrade and tweak their inventions.
