Help needed please - Dreamcast back-ups

Post by drewsie »

Thanks for looking in folks.

Ok, straight to the point.

Got myself a DC and downloaded about 20 games from various places Rapidshare, Bit Torrent etc. I've unrar'd them got the cdi. NRG MDS files etc and burnt them onto cdr's with Disc Juggler ver. 4.60.

Now, at the moment I've only managed to successfully copy 4 games + the boot disk that work in my DC.

I've got disc juggler set up correctly and I know for certain that the images are ok so why am I making so many coasters?

Never had this problem before. Alot of the games I downloaded were self booters and they just won't work. I've tried writing at the slowest speed but still no good :(

Could it be the quality of cdr's I'm using ? (Maxwell CDR 80'S) or could it be that later versions of the Dreamcast didn't play back-ups like earlier DC's did? I'm not sure what version I have but I thought all DC's played back-ups.

Anyone had similar expierences?

try different cd-r's. could be your laser on the drive is going bad too. cd-rs have about 70% reflectiveness where as original pressed cd's (and assuming gd-roms) are closer to 95%+.

just a thought; if disc juggler asks if you want it to correct errors in the image, don't let it. thats what was making my brothers back-ups fail.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.

My DC isn't really picky about media, but the later ones are. Get nicer media.

Thanks for the replies fella's.

Thought it might be the media to be honest or the laser on the DC is on it's way out.

I always select NO when prompted about the error with Disc juggler as well.

Thought it might be Vista that was at fault as well but I've tried my wife's laptop (XP) and there's no difference :(

Rumor rumor rumor, never met anyone who actually got ahold of one of these legendary don't read cd's dreamcasts. Only one i think may have that problem is the sakura taisen version from japan but that doesn't read music cd's either, designed that way.

Just remember cd-r's make ur little box work harder so don't abuse it. (i'm a hypocrite lol)

I'm not saying that they don't read CD-rs, I'm just saying that in my experience DCs that were made after, say, 2000 are a lot pickier about burnable media.

I recommend for images other than cdi to mount them first on daemon tools then burn them using discjuggler copy cds on the fly mode.

DC images other than cdi tend to be problematic in my experience. Since then I always look for cdi backup first if available.

If that doesn't work, you can try rebuilding the image using the echelon selfboot tutorial found here: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2004/08/ ... al-by.html :D

If that's too much for you then you can always try to find another rip of the games that don't work in cdi self-bootable format. Other than Zero Gunner 2, other games that i burn with cdi format works great on my dc :D
