The 3DO...Worth while?

Post by TheRev »

I don't really know too much about it. It wasn't a great system but it does have it's games I just not sure how many of the Non FMV ones were any good. It was for a while the only place to play Super Street Fighter II Turbo at home. I know it got Samurai Shodown. The Rob Zombietastic MK Clone Way of the Warrior which as much as people say it sucks is
a game that intrigues me.

I guess it had a good Japanese run and has a few intersting games too but I don't know about those.

So, is the 3DO worth while or should I best be looking at another obscure system.

Whilst I wouldn't say the 3DO doesn't have any worthwhile games, most of it's best ones were either ported from older consoles or the PC, or ported to Saturn or PS1 later. It's not a bad system, and I kinda like my Panasonic 3DO, but there are better systems to invest in.

Brain Dead 13 (FMV)
Dragon's Lair (FMV)
Guardian War / Power Kingdoms (RPG)
Lucienne's Quest (RPG)
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
Road Rash (Racing)
Samurai Shodown
Trip'd (Puzzle)
Gex (platformer) best version

it sucks but... its got these

If you want good and obscure, I reccomend a Neo Geo Pocket Color if you don't already have one... the games are pretty cheap and most of them are excellent!

A couple of years ago I got a nice starter 3do bundle with a good handful of complete games. I was excited to try out this obscure system, and had high hopes for it being awesome, or atleast worth holding on to. All of the games I got were garbage (off the top of my head I can remember Off World Defender, Sewer Shark, Primal Rage, and a bunch of others that were obviously forgettable) I was treated to mediocre FMV games and just all around crap. There isnt really anything that the 3do has that wasnt available on other systems. It didnt take long to realize that the 3do would quickly become just a conversation piece, and nothing more, and thus was sold. There are other obscure systems that have much better games that would be a better use of your cash.

Return Fire is a fun game if you're just looking to cause some chaos. It has a killer soundtrack as well. You'd be doing yourself a favor to pick this up.

Killing Time is a mixed bag. It's a horror themed first person shooter with some nice graphics and atmosphere, but the hit detection is horrendous and can cause a lot of frustration. It's still fun to play here and there, but you'll likely be turning in a fit of rage a few times.

Alone in the Dark, Road Rash, D, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo are some other games I got a lot of enjoyment out of, though I'm sure not everyone is crazy about D.

Sure about that?
I own the game for both the Saturn and the 3DO, and I can tell you the framerate is much smoother on the Saturn.

If the actual gameplay is the determining factor (as it should be) then you can safely believe those people that say this game sucks.
On that score, if there was a topic "worst video games of the 90's" , this one would merit inclusion.

Having owned both I'd put the Jaguar over the 3DO.

Neither are particularly good but most Jaguar games are exclusive to it.

(Missile Command 3D and Power Drive Rally are super good if you ever get a Jag btw)
Older. Not wiser.

If you don't have a TurboGrafx you should just get that.

Honestly I think it is not worth while unless you are into collecting.

The exclusives it still has are probably mostly lower quality games. Most of the best ones have been ported although I think there may be 1 or 2 games where the 3D0 retained the best version.

The Jaguar I think is in a similar situation but I think it actually still retains some high-quality exclusives.

I think the best is for you to try the games you think may be interesting on a 3D0 emulator and decide for yourself. But there are probably other systems that would be more worth your while - the NGPC and PC-Engine have been suggested and they have a nice number of quality exclusive games. Similarly you could do well in checking out an Amiga, also has a number of exclusives and a relatively large number of "best versions" from the period when it was arguably the king of the hill in terms of graphics and music.

Listen to these people.

Ever since I really "got into" retro gaming (regularly collecting/playing older games, hunting down more obscure systems, etc) in 2004 or so the 3DO remains the ONLY system that I have acquired, played with, and then gotten rid of again. I just could not find any compelling reasons to own it OR collect for it. The reasons have largely been pointed out in the above posts...

There are many, many more systems (basically all of them) that I would recommend to someone long before I would even suggest a 3DO.
