Is Lunar worth playing on the Sega CD?

Post by Violent By Design »

Or is the PSX version just so much superior, that there really isn't a point?

Thanks for the input!

I'd say burn a copy for the Sega CD and see what you think, but I do think it is hard to go back to it after playing the PSX port...

I have both on playstation but I have only played eternal blue on sega CD when I was about 12. I remember that you could level up your magic with points gained in battle and I believe they removed that feature from the playstation version. Is this correct?

I'm moving back into my dads house so maybe I should play eternal blue finally now that I'll have the time to do that.

If you have completed the PSX version then yeah it will feel like a downgrade. But if you haven't its still a lot of fun on the Sega CD and the Lunar charm is totally there. Plus it's always fun to see where a series began.

If you already have the PS1 versions you don't need the Sega CD versions - unless you wanna collect 'em. The PS1 versions trump all others.

I like the originals better. I am not a fan of seeing the enemies in the remake, I like random enemy encounters.
The story is the same in both, and with random encounters on a 16bit system the original feels right and more natural.

I played the Sega CD version first and it still holds a special place in my heart. The PS1 version is better in most ways but IMO the Sega CD one is still worth it.

There were a few discussions on this in the forum previously, when it was in Together Retro. You may want to look into that.

I only played the Sega CD version up to the Dragon cave. I think random encounters make the game worse, so I would go with the PS1 (in fact that is what I did).

That said, I looked up the original story (e.g. in youtube) and I think it is superior in a few significant points, over the story used in the PS1 remake (which is of course very similar). Also, if you like 90s style music, there is some "extremely 90s" music in the original.

But the remake has better gameplay (IMO random encounters are significantly worse gameplay, but some people apparently prefer it), better graphics / videos and that probably makes it the definitive version to play if you are only going to play one.
