Any of you guys here in IT field?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I work as an account manager (glorified name for sales associate) at an IT infrastructure firm (fancy name for server host and datacenter facilities) based out Chicago IL. The company is called Steadfast Networks and we compete with companies like Rackspace, Softlayer, and SingleHop.

While I am not a support tech, I work hand in hand with them to deliver cloud servers, dedicated servers, colocation, managed security, and disaster recovery solutions to about 1000 clients from around the world. So while I know some IT stuff, I pretty much can always get good advice from the guys I work with who know A LOT stuff collectively (server management, webhosting, clustering, SQL, linux os's, windows server os's, datacenter grade networking, c++, java, html coding, popular hosting tools like joomla, wordpress, and the list goes on and on).

But the best part of my job is I get to work from home or wherever else I may find myself! (which allows me to be on racketboy way more than I should) :D

^ lucky. Even though i am an admin and have more privilege than other users, racketboy, ign, etc gaming sites are blocked.

I administer the Unix and VMware server at a Healthcare company that is contracted by the state to provide medicaid and medicare, thus web browsing is very strict towards gaming sites ( what?...why?)

Strange because i browse online often and able to go to many sites. BUt any sites containing games, playstation, nintendo, etc is blocked.

Thats cool dude but sucks about the certain sites being blocked. Proxy sites dont work to get you on restricted sites?

Back to work stuff, how many servers do you guys operate? And do you guys have to deal with making the servers HIPPA compliant?

Actually there is a way to bypass the restrictions :D, but i kinda dont want to risk losing my job since it took forever to find one that i really like and enjoy working.

Well at our sites there are alot...hundred physical and virtuals since we are the only site in the state. But do have other sites in other states that we collaborate work with including the corporate sites.

In terms of HIPPA compliant i'm more than hundred 100% sure that all of the data are encrypted and secured. The server themselves is probably as well. I actually do not built the server itself but mainly just work within them, whether its virtual or physical (solaris, window server 2003,2008 etc...)

We do setup some server ourselves here and there but sinced i join we have just been expanding the vblock here and there.

My favorite thing about working in IT is being able to talk to guys any age about tech and video games and they know exactly if not more than what you know. Our Network Engineer in my group (6 people LAN team to be exact lol) is in his 60's and he is a gamer who loves fps... mainly the Mass Effect series.

Sadly i am the only retro gamer :( in my team.

My solution was to remote to my home (NX) to circumvent our schools web filter. The school uses a subscription based solution, but we can whitelist sites that are false positives needed for work, but we do not open stuff up for personal requests. WoW and Guildwars servers were blocked for a while, much to the students dismay.

I'm end-user helpdesk at an art school. We have a lot of printer jams, forgotten passwords and wireless connectivity tickets.

Nope.

But I am a Computer Information Systems major.

I'll probably end up working from home, for a family-owned small business. No way I could hack a 9-5 office job.
