Opinions and Favorite shmups

Post by brukner1129 »

I'm kinda curious to hear what kind of opinions and favorites everyone has with shmups. What are your favorite shmups? What time period is your favorite? What do you think the best shmup of all time is? Why?

My answers
My favorite shmups are any made by Cave and Toaplan,
I prefer mid- to late-90's shmups, but also enjoy playing around with ones from the 80's arcades, too.
Best shmup of all time in my opinion is Donpachi because it followed on the heels of Batsugun and was one of the pioneers of the bullet-hell sub-genre. Not to mention the countless hours of my childhood spent trudging my way ever closer to that elusive 1cc (which I have yet to obtain, I might add).

My favorites are probably Twin Hawk/Daisenpuu (early Toa) Gradius, Salamander, Xexex (Konami) Ibara Black Label, and Mushihimesama Futari. Batrider and the Daimahou games are great as well. Toa, Konami and Raizing games are generally in my wheel-house.

I really like early, simplistic, shooters, but I don't prefer one generation of shmups too heavily.

I can never pick just one (of anything) sorry.

Omg, I had nearly forgotten about Salamander. It was an arcade favorite of mine. Great game. In fact, I think I'll now have to go find a copy or mame rom or something and play it again... :D

I do not like bullet hell/pattern management shooters. Rather, I like some, but I generally am not fond of the style. My preference is for the 8/16-bit Star Soldier/Caravan-style shooters. Also, Galactic Attack/Layer Section and Raiden/Raiden II.

I think those will be my go-to shooters before any others.

I do like Konami shooters, but I don't like the crap they pull to make the game harder on subsequent loops. The whole suicide bullet thing is just dumb, IMO.

Love shooters, but not tied to any type or company other than stuff released in the 90's and on. Galaga can go suck an egg.

Raiden Fighters (2, Jet, even Viper)
(Sexy) Parodius
Mushi 2 (bug bitch)

For consoles, it gotta be Thunder Force 3 on Genny. But I do love my Duo because of the shooters: Soldier series and Blazing, Parodius, Twinbee, Gradius, Salamander, Spriggian, Dragon Spirit/Saber, the Thunders, Side Arms, Raiden, R-type, Psychosis, Aero Blasters, Cotton...

I do have a soft spot for Super Cobra. I plan to own it someday.
