Which system should I start my retro collection with?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

hm. Now I'm between Dreamcast and PSone. Thanks for the help guys. I'll see which one i'll pick up. Probably the one with most games at a good price pack you can find on ebay.

My choice would always be for the N64. The quality of the top games is unsurpassed on any other console. That being said, you might breeze through the 5 or 6 truly stunning games on the console in a month or two, and there is little reason to go back to it after that. It's a short, sharp thrill that will leave you loving Nintendo, but wanting more when there is nothing left. Check out the articles about the N64 on the website for a list of games that are good today, I wrote it:P

The Dreamcast is easily the easiest to get games for... Just burn a copy of the game of your choice and you are away! Also, there are several emulators for it that mean you can play other systems you don't have. I personally don't think the library quite stacks up to the N64s i.e. the best games on the Dreamcast aren't as good as the best on the N64, but there is a much broader range of games for the Dreamcast.

It is your choice... But don't discount the N64 so fast, Zelda OOT is a must play for any self respecting video game fan, even if you go on to hate it, you have to have at least tried it...

I'm having a blast collecting SNES games, so that's where my vote goes. There's so many good ones from all different kinds of genres. I would suggest going with an older console first, because it helps you appreciate the newer ones later on, and it's also cheaper.

My bad. What I meant was: The majority of great games.

I agree, though. There are some great games of the aforementioned genre.

You definitely won't hear me disagree on that. :D

Whatever you find cheap in the 2nd hand store. I got into this stuff when I was poking around in a thrift store about 10 years ago. Found this weird little grey console with number pads and cartridges, and bought it out of curiosity. Turns out it was an Intellivision 2, I grew up in the Nintendo era so this was totally new to me, and really cool!

The games were good. Pitfall! is a platformer any gamer will enjoy. The controls were interesting and added a good bit of depth to games like Major League Baseball. The Biplanes game on the Triple Action cart is still the best of its kind on any platform.

Later I found Atari 2600 stuff at a salvation army, cheap NES games at a pawn shop, a Sega CD at Goodwill. Half the fun is in the hunt.

I collected Dreamcast for a while and found it to be quite affordable. There are, of course, a few exceptions but even those don't get nearly as insane as some of the Saturn prices.

I also suggest picking up a Dreamcast, in spite of my fondness for SNES.

Not only are the original titles for the DC unlike anything else out there (as you've heard already), but there's also the emulation. Aside from the SNES, I play NesterDC more than anything else I own.

While I've yet to use the SNES or NES emulators on the DC, I can only imagine the pain and suffering using that horrible d-pad on the DC's controller. :(

I'm a dreamcast fanboy however to get the most out of every genre and the greatest variety... psone. Especially when it comes to rpg's, dreamcast doesn't hold a candle to it. Then again a library of over 1000 games vs a library of about 250 (na releases) it can't be helped.
