Saturn Action Replay - Please Help!

Post by kingwein »

So I wanted to play some imports on my un-modded U.S. Saturn, and I bought an Action Replay 4M from Play-Asia, which is what was recommended to me. One of these: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-k8-49-en-70-1b2

My understanding is that when I boot up the Saturn with one of these in, it should take me to a special menu where I can then play the imports. But that's not happening. I've tried using it on two different Saturns now -- when I try it with just the cart and no disc, the system boots to the standard Saturn menu and I get the message that the disc drive is empty. When I try it with an import disc in, the system boots to the same Saturn menu and it says the disc is incompatable with the system...

I'm not really sure what the issue is but it's kind of annoying. Is anyone familiar with these? Could it be a problem with the cart? Or with both of my Saturns?

plz help :/

Have you cleaned the contacts on the cart?

If its not working on either of the saturns it would suggest that its the cart. You should get the menu appear whether or not the disk is an import or not - the menu gives the option to enter cheat codes for the games and the regoincheck bypass is just handled silently by the cart.

My guess, also, is that it is a slot-to-cart pin problem.

Damn expansion slots are very finicky, especially if the cart is the slightest bit dirty. Sometimes it takes many times of powering on/off and reseating my memory cart (offical even) before it sees it.

In addition to cleaning the contacts on the cart, try blowing out the slot itself with canned air.

Thanks guys. I wasn't sure about the cart having a problem like that since it was new. How would you suggest cleaning the contacts on it?

The same thing happened to me not too long ago. Just keep on trying and eventually the cartridge will work. I had my Pro Action Replay for 10 years and it still hasn't let me down. You could even blow into the cartridge and slot NES style to get it working again.
I don't play games, I experience them.

The carts can be very fiddly to use and are pretty cheaply made. I bought two from Play-Asia a couple of months ago; the first worked first time no problem while the second - which came in a completely different box - took a good 4 or 5 attempts before it made a connection and sprang into life.

Only advice I can give is blow a bit of air onto the connecters (cart & slot) to clear any hairs and dust.

If you're still having no luck with it then get in touch with Play-Asia and ask about a refund/replacement and tell them you've tried it in two different machines with no luck.

Attack the connections on the cart with Q-tips (cotton swabs) and some 90% rubbing alcohol (don't use the less pure stuff). I had trouble the other night and had to pull out my Saturn backup and it took my like 10 tries to get the cart to be recognized. PITA.

If only my sound chip wasn't misbehaving in my modded Saturn. Crazy-ass stuff.
