Re: Wind Waker HD coming to the Wii U
Nintendo's financial situation isn't even close to Sega's, and people have been crying about Nintendo being doomed since at least as far back as the N64 days. Whatever the reasoning is for them not putting out floods of new IPs, I seriously doubt it's because they aren't making enough money.eggman wrote:This argument is a tough one to get past. I agree with most of what was said above about lack of new IP's etc..
I have a couple of thoughts to add:
1) I think many of the top dogs at Nintendo have been with the company a long time. This means that the guys who have been successful with the likes of Mario, Link, Kirby are going to keep iterating on that success until sales fall off, which if you look at Wii, DS, 3DS, has not happen yet. So, if they keep making new iterations that sell, then why would they change and take a risk on a new IP or multiple IP's?
2) As a follow up from the thought above....with the increased cost of development and time needed to create huge games like the 1st party IP's are, a standalone game company may not be able to risk all that is at stake for creating a new IP instead of a new Zelda? There has been a lot of talk about Nintendo going the same route as Sega, becoming a Software house only. Why would Miyamoto and Iwata want to be responsible for risking a new IP/IP's and possibly the end of Nintendo as they/we know it now? Is that risk real? Maybe?
3) Personally, I think after the lack luster sales of the N64 and Gamecube relative to its competition, Nintendo decided that they had to innovate and differentiate themselves from Sony and Microsoft in order to compete. They probably looked at everything they had and decided to innovate on the hardware end of things instead of software. I feel like they decided to allow the new Hardware ideas like motion control, dual screens, touch screens etc.. to influence their existing IP's enough to increase sales and make them successful. Again, if you look at Wii, DS and to some extent 3DS and Wii U sales so far, they seem to be competing and holding their own.
Thoughts?

Maybe it's just the other way around. They are rich enough not to have to prove themselves anymore. So they take the easy way out now. Milk existing franchises, and let others make new games for them...AppleQueso wrote:I seriously doubt it's because they aren't making enough money.

If the business is successful with this policy I don't see a strong reason to change it.elmagicochrisg wrote:Maybe it's just the other way around. Bumping this...
So from what I can gather, this release adds:
-Better visuals
-touchscreen for inventory
-stream the game to the gamepad
-apparently the boat goes faster
-and some quests have been streamlined
I'm hoping they price it at $40... (wishful thinking, I know).

It's Zelda so it'll be full price for sure. I've never played the original so I'm looking forward to this regardless.Opa Opa wrote:Bumping this...

There's also a system where you can send messages and photos to other players through Miiverse. They will wash ashore in other people's games as a message in a bottle. I think it's kinda neat even if it's a bit pointless.

Re: Wind Waker HD coming to the Wii U
Do you know how hard it is to create a unique franchise and have it be successful? Look at the games from the previous generation and really see a franchise start from scratch there. It costs a lot of money to develop a new franchise successfully, simply because it needs to do something new and unique, as well as refined to the point of near perfection. Nintendo can't just crap out a franchise and have it be gold.elmagicochrisg wrote:Maybe it's just the other way around. They are rich enough not to have to prove themselves anymore. Also when talking about taking the easy way out, think about their systems. The cost to build the technology is a lot and there is an immense risk involved in releasing them. You don't see it, but there were probably numerous prototypes of different systems that people at Nintendo HQ worked on that probably cost a lot of money.
You are right, this really is the easy way out........

Well that does sound kind of neat even if it doesn't do anything in the grand scheme of things.CavZee wrote:There's also a system where you can send messages and photos to other players through Miiverse. Any details? I'm a little interested in that game if it's challenging enough.MrPopo wrote:Did you not unlock the expert ticket?ZenErik wrote:Heh. That K-ON! rhythm game blows. Played it on PSP for a bit. Project DIVA may be on the easy side but K-ON! is baby mode and not even fun.
