Modded Ps1 - Identify mod Not playing games

Post by noravitz »

I just recently picked up 2 schp-1001 playstations I have read up the first us model ps and have found out alot , including some of them having issues playing games unless they are upside down ect. 1 of the playstations i noticed when i opened it had some type of mod chip soldered with wires all across the bottom motherboard . I only opened it to clean it and try and figure out why it would not play games when the other schp-1001 would play them fine.
So if I were to post a picture of the modification would anyone think they could determine what mod/chip was installed?I can get a picture up fast but dont want to take it apart again unless some thinks they can identify it.

If it is a use full mod I think I may just swap mainboards to the other ps1 with the good laser/rails

Thanks to everyone in advance.

I doubt its the mod. Its probably the system itself needs a new laser. I have personally had little luck in changing out the lasers. There are plethora of them on eBay, but none of them seem to sit correctly, and they end up dragging the disc. I actually have decided just to use a PS2 for PS1 purposes. The PS2 allows for YPbPr output and S/PDIF output of PS1 games, so even without the filters on you get better quality right out of the box.

The SCPH-1001 barely work anymore. They're lasers sucked. They were cheap as hell. If you do try to replace it, note that not any PS1 laser will do. There are charts that tell you what models fit what revisions. I know the argument. the 1001 has superior sound right? Well that may be the case, but I believe its only after alteration and improvement of the sound by further modification (check audiophile websites for details on such mods). The best quality sound will be had from using the S/PDIF stream from a PS2 directly into the highest quality external DAC you can afford.

Be sure to show detail of the chip and solder points. This will help to cut down the guessing, I suspect a bad solder job. At least post what you know already such as how many wires and where connected to PCB. Does the chip have any info stamped on it? Even if you know what chip it is, not sure that will help determine on the why the PS1 is not working at all.

Odds are its just a chip to allow it to play CD-R burns. Which can actually burn the laser out quicker since CD-Rs are not perfect.

If you're able to successfully swap it let me know. I never had luck with mine. The laser didn't have the correct fit, and the discs would drag.

Well I never was able to get the modded one going even with a good schp1001 laser I evan tried a psone laser. I ended up cutting the mod out to see if that was it. Still no luck. I ended up use just using the Psone laser in my schp1001 and it runs much better with my backup games via gameshark. And i was able to put the wornout working laser from the 1001 into the psone so the psone still works and plays original games.

not to bad 2 working consoles one works with my legal backups.

on a side note someone from craigslist sold me a ps3 bluray drive for 10$ and i was able to swap the bluray drive and now ps3 is fully functional console that plays disk again. all in one day
