Game reproductions, do they exist? If so, how can you tell?

Game reproductions, do they exist? If so, how can you tell?

Post by goldenpp72 »

So i've been collecting on consoles like the snes, etc lately. Something today made me worry a bit. A seller on ebay sold me some mega man titles and they had their manuals, box and cart. I was talking to him further and he also mentioned a store that sells never released games in english, and it made me worry that if they are able to make those with boxes and manuals, that maybe the games i'm buying could be reproductions as well.

Is there any way to distinguish the difference or check for authenticity for various consoles?

The answer to all your questions is yes.

I wouldn't be the one to tell you where to look on SNES games though.

Repros do exist, and sometimes for more dishonest purposes than simply making unreleased games available on original hardware.

Just get yourself a gamebit and open up the cartridge. Authentic carts should have the Nintendo logo printed onto the board.

There are official re-releases, too. Majesco did a few of these on the Genesis.

Is there a way to tell if the box or manual are also authentic though? That's really annoying actually.

Usually the best way is the quality of the box, most repros I've seen on eBay look thinner than the official release.

Thinner like actually thinner in dimensions or thinner material?

One of the repro boxes I have is actually a bit wider...

It is fairly easy to tell I think. the graphics and text usually have that somewhat grainy printer look to them. It isnt obvious, but if you look close enough you can tell. The ink is also a bit tacky by touch.

It is hard to give a tell-tale thing to look for, but just a bunch of subtle little things.

My bootleg game experience is limited to Fire Emblem for GBA. The box was really cheaply printed, the manual mostly contained promotional text rather than anything one would expect from a manual, and the cartridge had to be forced into the system.

IT WAS PRETTY OBVIOUSLY NOT AUTHENTIC?
