Crystalis, NES vs GBC

Post by codegamer »

I used to own the GBC version of the game and loved it (ironic cuz i used to loathe the original zelda) and never knew it was originally on the NES.
Has anyone played both versions and can tell me the differences? Just curious...

BTW, I just got the GBC version (again) for $6.50, in the mail now.

The opening cinematic is arguably better in the GBC version (depending on your tastes), but the NES version plays better. The GBC version is too "zoomed in" for my tastes, and it impairs both combat and navigation. I hope that helps.

You'll want the NES version. GBC is an inferior port, and the zoomed in view is annoying. The NES version can still be found for cheap.

I'd say the biggest advantage of the GBC version is that you don't have to do so much weapon swapping. No enemy is immune to a particular sword, they just take low amounts of damage.

This game, IMO, is the game most-deserving of a sequel that never received one. Such a freaking good game! I never did play the GBC version, though, just the NES one like 20 times over.

The Game Club 199X podcast from September goes into both ports in depth.

The biggest drawback to the GBC one for me was the music change. The NES version has IMO some of the best music on the system.

wow, wasn't aware of the big differences! May just have to get the NES version in the coming weeks! Will still be keeping the GBC version for portability :D
