Same here. Death Proof was awesome, Planet Terror was meh. I've seen all of Rodriguez's stuff (except Spy Kids films), but it ranks low in his repertoire for me too.

I may end up liking Death Proof too. I won't know til I see it though. When Grindhouse came out, the concept behind Planet Terror just appealed to me more so I was quick to watch it. At the time, they were available as separate features so I ended up just getting the Planet Terror DVD and just never got around to getting Death Proof.

Death Proof was just decent overall to me. I just didnt find the dialog with the girls all that interesting. Some of the car stunts were cool.

I also dont have the urge to re-watch it like I would Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, or Reservoir Dogs. I can watch those most any time, with Death Proof, once or twice was enough for me.

That's the problem with Death Proof: The dull and extremely boring 40-45 minutes of girls rambling about everything. I LOVED the ending though.

the point of the dull girls talking was that THAT is what actual grindhouse films were like. They were low-budget, and often padded with tons of dialogue to fill 80 mins. In that sense, I loved how great an homage it was. Think of the climactic revenge scene at the end, and how fake it looks when
they stomp his head
. That's pretty close to the quality of those original films. On the flip, Planet Terror was too slick, too big budget, and too much to feel legit to me. It was more like just an over-the-top movie that was overblown to the point of not feeling like what most films of that 42nd Street era actually were like at all. QT went for a more authentic nostalgia, whereas Rodriguez kind of used rose-tinted glasses.

What exploitation films have you seen? Most of them aren't slow paced, have boring dialogue or annoying. Hell, fricking Forced Entry, Cannibal Ferox and Erotic Nights Of The Living Dead have better dialogue than Death Proof!

Although I can agree with you about the extremely high budget and shiny visuals of Death Proof.

the ones you're mentioning are the "popular" ones that have survived as high water marks of the genre. The ones I'm talking about were the lesser known ones -- the (literal) B movies on the double bill.

Since you brought up some import-cinema, take something like Twitch of the Death Nerve. What a fucking boring mess of dialogue, but with a few fantastic violent scenes sprinkled throughout.

I'd love to see QT do Batman.

I'm sure you meant "make a Batman movie", but the first image that popped in my head is funnier.
