Thought I'd post this here instead of my TV thread for now, figured more might see it.
So yeah, do you guys prefer Game Mode or not? With it off it's hard to say if it seems bad for PS3/360 gaming to me, but the PS2 definitely looked unnatural to me. As for shows and movies I hear without it things will have that "soap opera" effect and look way too smooth. I'll probably mess with it more today, but I'm thinking of having it on for everything.
"Game Mode" for TV's, yay or nay?

"Game Mode" basically disables most of the TV's post-processing enhancement features in an attempt to reduce lag. Whether it does much naturally depends on the tv.
The "soap opera effect" can be turned on and off via an option called something like Motionflow, Smoothmotion, Motionplus, etc. All tv manufacturers have their own fancy name for their crappy 120hz smoothing effect. The option might be kinda buried so you'll probably have to dig around for it, just look for something with a (tm) and probably some reference to motion or 120hz.

Yeah I've got a Samsung, so looks like there's actually two... Auto Motion Plus and LED Motion Plus. I'll just disable both.

Trying to find the perfect settings on any new modern LCD/LED TV is a pain in the ass, i have a 32in Vizio 1080p SmartTV, and i have it set on Vivid with the Ambient Light Sensor set to High, when it's off it is super bright.

Turn off the sensor and then turn the backlight settings manually to how you like it.Hazerd wrote:Trying to find the perfect settings on any new modern LCD/LED TV is a pain in the ass, i have a 32in Vizio 1080p SmartTV, and i have it set on Vivid with the Ambient Light Sensor set to High, when it's off it is super bright.
Ambient Light sensor is annoying
Re: "Game Mode" for TV's, yay or nay?
Alright, knocked off the motion plus on everything and yeah this looks way better. I have Game Mode set to off for everything so I guess I probably don't need to bother messing with that.
The 42" LG I had for a day looked amazing out of the box, both PS3/360 (HDMI) and even my PS2 (component) looked perfect. But yeah had to tweak this 40" Samsung a lot, but I think I finally got everything looking right. The PS2 has still been tricky though, I think I've noticed it looks a lot better with the sharpness boosted up quite a bit. I think I have that at 35 for the PS3/360, but 65 for the PS2 so far. Guess it makes sense you want sharpness higher for older SD consoles.

Sounds like somebody has the same TV I do. I'm no expert on TV set ups though, so I'm reading this thread for tips.Xeogred wrote:Alright, knocked off the motion plus on everything and yeah this looks way better. Try googling around for some optimized PQ settings. You can then adjust things from there to your specific setup, lighting, and taste.

This is really the best advice. Spend some time on AVS and try to find a dedicated thread for the TV in question. You can copy the the calibrated settings for your model, but every set is unique in producing its a/v capabilities. So yeah, try some generally accepted settings for your TV, and then tweak as Queso mentioned.AppleQueso wrote:Try googling around for some optimized PQ settings.
