So, how does the combat in this game work? I've been trying to find out, but due to recent issues, I haven't been able to watch youtube or the like, and I haven't found any true written descriptions on the internet.

Well i went ahead and ordered it off amazon for $29.99 + free 2 day shipping with my prime membership (probably the cheapest youll find this game new)

But since i have a soft-modded Wii, i had the PAL version downloaded and decided to try it out and it pretty much bought me.

I recommend the GameSpot review video:

But ill try and explain it anyways, basically in melee weapon mode you can run up to an enemy and press forward on the Left Stick (classic controller) and attack, or you can set it to manual mode and just press A (classic controller) to attack.

There is also a crossbow fps mode you can switch to, for attacking enemies far away, and you can snipe and head-shot certain enemies.

I havent played farther than that though, there is also a mode that pauses the game and you can choose which enemy your characters each attack, but havent gotten to that part yet.

Yeah. You're definitely going to want to set the combat to manual mode to experience the true joy of this game.

The above post explains the very basics of it, but there's a bit more to it, and you learn all sorts of neat tricks as you progress. I'd explain more, but don't want to spoil anything. Commanding your allies through battle also becomes pretty essential as certain tactics are required to defeat tougher enemies later in the game.

I wouldn't hesitate whatsoever with picking up a copy, the game is great.

Alright guys, thanks.

I will, as soon as I pick up a Wii U. (Just have to be able to explain my first true blue JRPG being on my shelf...)

I should add however, that The Last Story is a linear RPG. There isn't much open-ended exploring involved.

There's still a definite feeling of progress and taking on new challenges throughout the game. You're consistently having to adapt your battle strategies to your environment, and the combat has a fair amount of depth. There's blocking, counter-attacking, targeting, special attacks, long-distance shooting, team battle commands; and the "gathering" ability.

Story is engaging (though cliche'd), and the game is shorter than most in the genre. It'd be perfect for someone who feels the need to explain why they own a JRPG.

I added this to my gamefly queue. I'm guessing that since Xenoblade was not nearly as good as people said it was, that the reverse is true of The Last Story and it's better than people have said it is. Some of my favorite games are usually underrated (like Lollipop Chainsaw)

Guess I'll know for sure in a few days. I'm expecting both this and Asura's Wrath in the mail soon

I'm quite enjoying this one, now about 25% in...

I didn't realize this had some big JRPG names behind it. I am impressed by the quality of the production thus far - it is certainly a cut above anything I've played on a console in the genre is some time.

Thus far I also like it much more than Xenoblade Chronicles, FWIW.

Comparisons between The Last Story and Xenoblade aren't really fair to either game. They accomplish (mostly) different things, so which game you prefer will depend on what qualities you want from an RPG.

For me, The Last Story wasn't nearly as impressive as Xenoblade. But that's just my personal preference for large areas to explore, little secrets and side-quests littered throughout a huge world, and randomly generated loot all over the place. Other people will prefer The Last Story because it's a shorter, tighter experience.

But to fault either game for choosing to excel at some categories while being limited in other areas seems silly.

I think you make a good point, as a lot of the pros you mentioned for Xenoblades are things I hated about it. However, I would argue it's because it didn't do those things well since I liked FFXII and it did a lot of the same stuff, but just better. It's funny that more people don't pick up on the fact that Xenoblades plays like a FFXII clone in a lot of ways, especially since so many of its fans are FF haters. Life is full of little ironies

I do like The Last Story's focused approach though, as I'm not in the mood for a really time sinking rpg right now and it definitely isn't that. I love the look and feel of it too. The Last Story feels like it could have been a 360/PS3 game while Xenoblade feels very much like a limited, Wii game. TLS just has amazing production value and great music.
