Adding gravity control to a run-n-gun was such a great concept, and they implemented it perfectly here. The first level is a bit on the easy side, but the difficulty starts to ramp up at a great pace from there. I never found the game to be too cheap, but some parts were definitely challenging. The game has some excellent boss fights too. My only gripe would be with the last boss's difficulty, which just seemed too low after some of the other fights. However, clearing the game gives you a password for an "expert" round, so perhaps the end boss of that round will be a bit more challenging.

This game is just all around really great. I didn't put down the controller from my first credit until the credits were rolling.
Metal Storm is great, and I am glad another member has played through it. I particularly enjoyed the boss battle where you have to reverse gravity between the various floating platforms while the battleships from the third level of R-Type fly through the background:

Are you playing ver 1 or ver 2? My old character is ver 2 now.

I just had a weird thought, though. I wonder if anyone has every tried using internet sharing through ethernet with a mac to get DCs and PS2s online.

There is the Xlink Kai service for a whole bunch of older consoles.

I was using v2.

I feel like there is a way to do this for PS2 and GameCube, so I see no reason why you couldn't do so with a Dreamcast BBA.

@Ferret: xLink Kai is totally different. It takes LAN enabled games and makes them playable online. Unfortunately no such games exist for DC, so xLink Kai does not support DC. There were some DC games that you could use a link-cable on, but it was not an ethernet cable so won't work.

Yeah, I know about xlinkkai. I meant more about feeding an internet connection from a mac with internet sharing, rather than having to wire the console up from a router, etc.

I completely misread that statement.

I know it works for PS2 as I've done it in the past with Internet connection sharing on Windows.

Cool. Well, then it seems like I could be set with the dreamcast. I'll have to give it a shot, and hope for the best.

YES! That boss fight was just epic. At first I thought I had to jump to the platforms side-to-side, but that just didn't work. I ended up getting through the level with the free hit still in tact, so when I fell off I was able to hit the last platform.

When the boss rush comes up though, there is no way to get a free hit, so it was quite something finding a way to kill the platform you are standing on, as it spins in a circle, without touching the ground.

I had no idea those ships were from R-Type, that is really cool. I need to get in touch with my shmup roots and give the R-Type series some love.

1. Sniper Elite V2 (PS3)(TPS)
2. Teen Agent (PC)(Point and Click Adventure)
3. Alpha Protocol (PS3)(RPG)
4. Beneath A Steel Sky (PC)(Point and Click Adventure)
5. Imscared - A Pixelated Nightmare (PC)(Horror)
6. Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (SNES)(RPG)

It's unfortunate that I am only just now getting around to playing this, as it was a lot of fun! Sure, it's linear, and gameplay is reminiscent of The Adventures of Link but with a heavier RPG focus(leveling up for better statistics/health), but it's still a lot of fun and somewhat challenging in that even at max level, the player can quickly die from some of the bosses and common enemies. But I had a lot of fun running through the various dungeons, seeing the different enemy designs, and coming up with ways to get past them. And while the bosses were generally beaten through pattern memorization, there were some that beat the snot out of me.

It's not a traditional JRPG, and is quite the departure from the previous Ys games I hear. But I'd have no problem recommending people check this game out.

I've always heard that the SNES port of Ys III was the "worst" one. I haven't had a chance to try the Genesis or Turbo CD versions - yet.
