Finally got a Sega Genesis model 1 High definition
I was finally able to acquire a model 1 high definition Sega Genesis, though I did notice it does have a little bit of rainbow banding, will that effect the sound quality? and mentioning sound it is much better then my old model 2, which was the first genesis I had ever owned. I am curious is there any way to tell what years it was made in? the serial number is 110005362 the bottom says made in china. the console its self looks like some one packaged it with tape and left a few noticeable stripes from the old glue, need to clean that off, and for some reason put extra round plastic feet on the bottom, carefully took those off of course, now all I need is some gu-gone for the tape residue, red cap over expansion connector behind the door is still one though. I finally own a console that originally came out when I was born, go 1989.

Does it have the license screen when you turn it on? ( trademark security system)
Does it say FJ8USASEGA? Then it is a TMSS version.
Does it say FJ846EUASEGA? Then it is a non-TMSS version.

it says FJ846EUSEGA, still has the expansion port on the back. is there any released info from sega explaining there serial number system? one site mentioned that the first two digits/letter from left to right are the code for the factory, next one is last digit of year, next is batch run, and any after that is the actual prodcution number, but if that is the case it would mean mine was the 5,362 made in 1990. when did TMSS start?vlame wrote:Does it have the license screen when you turn it on? tmss started when they applied for the new fcc code id. thats the only way to tell.

An easier way to tell if a system has TMSS or not is by looking for patent numbers on one of the stickers on the bottom. If it has a silver strip with patent numbers, then it has TMSS.

it is non TMSS. just curious what years it might have been made in.
Re: Finally got a Sega Genesis model 1 High definition
Based on my experience they were made around summer 1989 up until early 1991. Discounting the TMSS and non-TMSS variants, the HDG Genesis was made from '89 up to mid-1992.ATARI800XLfan wrote:it is non TMSS. just curious what years it might have been made in.

Re: Finally got a Sega Genesis model 1 High definition
that makes sense then, 110005632 must mean factory 1, year 1991, batch 0, number 5,632. must be one of the later non TMSS models. other reason I got it besides the better sound is the looks, the model 1 looks much better then the model 2, in my honest opinion.ApolloBoy wrote:Based on my experience they were made around summer 1989 up until early 1991. I've always been wondering; why does it having TMSS or not matter besides the license screen? As far as I know everything else about the console is the same. I have a model 1 (with HDG on it) that doesn't have the license screen btw.

You can play imports on non-TMSS systems.dogman91 wrote:I've always been wondering; why does it having TMSS or not matter besides the license screen? As far as I know everything else about the console is the same. I have a model 1 (with HDG on it) that doesn't have the license screen btw.
Older. Not wiser.
