PCE DUO R sound problem

Post by Menegrothx »

I got a DUO R recently and now that I have games to play with it, it seems like the console has some serious sound problems. In cinematic scenes (opening of YS 1&2 and far east of eden 2) the sound just barely works, a lot of skipping, weird noises, no sound at all for the most of the time etc. During gameplay the music works normally but suddenly stops working. In YS 1&2 the music works normally in the starting village but the music stops as soon as I attack an enemy out side the village. In wonderboy 3 the music works normally, then suddenly stops working for no apparent reason and will remain silent untill I reach another level. Some times I can complete a whole level with the music working, some times I'll have to play through an entire level in silence (music wise that is).

I dont have the tool required for opening the console. Any idea how I can find if the problem is in the capacitors or somewhere else?

When I search this issue on google I mostly see this guide

My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I'm no technical expert, but I imagine it is a problem with the capacitors. My first Turbo Duo had a problem with ignoring some sounds after a while, and my second one wouldn't save games to the internal RAM after several years. I had my friend replace the capacitors on this one, and now it works fine. (Well, I assume it does; I haven't touched it in a year.) He's a DeVry graduate and designs hospital electronics for a living, so he was able to order all the parts from his work. Somebody on here or the PCEFX forum supplied the schematics.

I should probably sign onto that forum again sometime soon, let my account there get deleted. I haven't been on there for quite a while.

Duo R is not known for bad caps. Sounds like your CD drive gears are shot. Still need a tool to open it up. If you do not feel up to the task, join the PCEFX forum and start reading about symptoms. You might find someone to take pitty on you and offer to repair your sick Duo.
